NOTICE OF DECISION UNDER REGULATION 32 FILM POSTERS VIDEO SLICK TO: The Film and Video Labelling Body Inc. PO Box 2627 Ponsonby Auckland Pursuant to regulation 32 of the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Regulations 1994 the film poster entitled: Slut Safari is Not Approved if approval refused, the reasons for the decision: In accordance with Reg.28(a) of the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Regulations 1994, the OFLC is required to consider whether the video slick would be likely to be classified as objectionable if the slick was submitted under s13(1) of the Act for classification under s23 of the Act. Section 23 of the Act requires that the video slick be examined in accordance with the relevant criteria stated in section 3 of the Act. The video slick presents images of clothed and partially naked men and women. The title of the slick, “Slut Safari” appears as the main focus of the front and back cover, and spine, of the video slick. It is also noted that the purpose of the video slick is to advertise an associated video recording. In addition to this salacious title, the phrase “handles it through the back door.” makes strong reference to anal intercourse. The word “slut” is defined in The Collins Concise English Dictionary as “a dirty slatternly woman” or an “immoral woman”. Given that these references are intended to be insulting and offensive towards women it is considered that the video slick demeans and degrades the women shown on the slick by referring to them in such a manner. Similarly, the use of such a term in a sexual context, can be construed as representing women as a class as inherently inferior to members of the public. Given the dominant effect and purpose of the video slick, as well as its sexual context, it is considered that the availability of the video slick would be likely to be injurious to the public good. The video slick is therefore not approved. Date: 04 January 1996 Chief Censor of Film and Literature (signed): OFLC Ref: 9501995 tmpD42.tmp
