Thepresentstudyisdividedintotwosections,thefirstdealingwiththe Sienese Renaissance tomb slab, the second with freestanding and wall tombs. Thoughafewsculptorsdidproducemorethanonesepulchraltype,generallyspeak- ingthereislitdecontinuitybetweenthesebroadcategories.Infact,eachofthese classesofmonumentspresentsitsownproblemsandinsightsintoSieneseartistic andsocialideas,andthisinvestigationapproacheseachaccordingly.Thus,though thereareexceptions,thetombslabistreatedlargelyindevelopmentaltermswhile thefreestandingandwallmonumentsareconsideredmoreinlightoftheinsights 1 Asusedhere,thetctm'^mbmonument"includesalltombmarketsexceptsmallerinscriptionslabs.This study,however,willbeconcernedlargelywithfiguredmonuments,whetherintheformoffreestanding works,walltombsorreliefeffigies.Asithappens,therearenoextantunfiguratcdsarcophagifi-omtheperiod, andthefewsurvivingtombslabsdecoratedonlywiththesubjects'coats-of-armsaddlittletothetotalpicture.
