Today, we have not just survived, but prospered. Key among the pillars of our success is National Service. It is the backbone of our defence. It ensures Singapore’s physical security. It enables us to stand up for our rights, and not crumble under external threats and intimidation. For 35 years now, our National Servicemen have provided the bedrock of peace and stability upon which we have built our economy and society. Over the years, National Service has also become a rite of passage for Singapore men. The shared experiences strengthen camaraderie, and bond them as members of the Singapore family. But life is not easy for our National Servicemen. They are expected to play many roles, and shoulder many responsibilities. They have to be husband, father, employer or employee, even while they undertake to defend the nation. On behalf of all Singaporeans and the Government, I salute each and every one of our National Servicemen for their sacrifices, dedication and contributions. Going forward, I am confident that you will continue to give of your best to protect your country, family and fellow Singaporeans. You play a key role in our efforts to build an enduring nation. GOH CHOK TONG Prime Minister 3 4 P R E F A C E A fter Singapore became an independent nation in 1965, building the capability to defend ourselves became top priority. We knew it was not viable to sustain a large regular standing army, and National Service was introduced in 1967 so that we could build a credible defence force for Singapore. Over 35 years, Singaporeans from diverse racial, religious, and educational back- grounds have been brought together during National Service. This commemorative book captures much of the common life-shaping experiences of our men, and the development of NS over the years. Shoulder to Shoulder evokes what our young men went through in the journey from enlistment to demobilisation. In looking at the many aspects of the National Serviceman’s journey, the book conveys the fine spirit and proud tradition of our people. Singaporeans know that we must never take our security for granted. It is only with the dedication and commitment of our people that our nation’s security and future may be assured. Our NSmen, Full-Time National Servicemen and all who have contributed to our national defence effort have sacrificed much. This book is a tribute to their contributions and sacrifice. TONY TAN KENG YAM Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence 5 10
