GREGG SHORTHAND DICTIONARY BY JOHN ROBERT GREGG New and Revised Edition Copyright, 1901, By John R. Gregg Copyright, 1916, By The Gregg Publishing Company '!be Gr!S9 %6fisbi[!!J C0!!!fl!!!l NEW YORK CHICAGO BOSTON SAN FRANCISCO LONDON Shorthand Forms Written by AlleE RINNE HAGAR e5t-K.p.-50 PRJNTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA PREFACE The GREGG SHORTHAND DICTIONARY has been com- piled particularly to meet the demands of students studying the system without the assistance of a teacher. Under ordinary circumstances, a Diction- ary of Gregg Shorthand is of but minor value, owing to the simplicity of the system, the practical invari- ability of outline, and the fact that the vast majority of words may be quickly and -correctiy constructed from the principles of the system presented in the Manual. On the other hand, -the dictionary is a useful book of reference, and is also valuable in classi- fying and standardizing certain word terminations, as well as being useful for review and practice work. The present volume contains about seventeen thousand of the most common words-approximately ten thousand more than were included in the old edition. These words have been selected with a view of assisting the student in building up a comprehen- sive working vocabulary. In compiling the book, we were able to include a greater variety of words through the omission of many hundreds of deriva- tives formed by the addition of ly, ing, ingly, etc. The outlines in the dictionary are written in accordance with the principles presented in the new Manual of Gregg Shorthand issued about the same time. I desire to acknowledge my indebtedness to Mrs. Hubert A. Hagar for the beautiful shorthand forms in the dictionary, and for her assistance in selecting the words, and to Miss Kitty Dixon for her assist- ance in deciding many technical points and in the proof-reading of the pages.
