Believing faith and knowledge went hand-in- hand, he envisioned an institution ofhigher learning rooted in faith, hope and justice. For 175 years. Spring Hill has been realizing Portier's dream by integrating spiritual and intellectual growth. This nurturing environment has influenced thousands oflives and helped generations oflearners discover their own special gifts and talents. Celebrating this milestone in Spring Hill College's history, we are reminded ofour longstanding Jesuit traditions as we move forward with a vision for the future. As we continue to enhance our physical surroundings, I envision a future where we seek excellence in all things, shape leaders in the service ofothers, educate for the common good and integrate faith and culture. I also hope, through the National Alumni Association, to build a lifelong community offriendships. As your president, I am committed to supporting programs that reconnect you to the College. May your association with the more than 10,000 other alumni ofSpring Hill College provide you continuous opportunities for meaningful experiences and friendships. My wish is that this 175th Anniversary Edition ofthe Spring Hill College Alumni Directory will con- tinue to assist you in keeping in touch with your alumni family! Sincerely, Gregory F Lucey, S.J. President IV Fr. Lucey's Vision for the College on the Hill Much like the rich soil that feeds the powerful oaks lining the campus, the unique Spring Hill learning experience has fed the body, mind and spirit of all who have entered its gates. Time and again, graduates say someone at Spring Hill "believed in me," "taught me to believe in myself," "took the opportunity to know me personally." These words are testament to the val- ues that have guided the College throughout its history. As we look to the new century. Spring Hill has an even greater opportuni- ty to touch the lives ofa new generation oflearners. In an age filled with wondrous technology, we have the opportunity to participate in the trans- formation ofthe learning process. More importantly, in the spirit ofSt. Ignatius, founder ofthe Jesuit order, we have the opportunity to awaken minds and spirits to the pursuit oftruth, the beauty ofcreation, the dignity oflife, the demands ofjustice and the mystery ofGod's love. We have the opportunity to give students a moral compass to help them lead wisely and effectively in an increasingly complex world. As Ignatius said more than 450 years ago, the education in life and doc- trine students receive today will be beneficial to others, with the fruit expanding more widely every day. Educating students for life remains the distinguishing mark ofa Spring Hill education as we seek to imbue stu- dents with values that transcend material goals-values that they will carry with them in their daily lives and works as they too touch the lives ofthat ever-widening circle.Much like the majestic trees that line the Avenue of the Oaks, these values have stood the test oftime. However, for Spring Hill's timeless values to endure, we must seize the opportunities now before us so that new generations will leave our gates ready to shape the new cen- tury with vision, justice and compassion. With a committed Board ofTrustees, a dedicated faculty and staff, a solid upward enrollment trend and an alumni body engaged as never before, the time to take our distinctive mission to a new level has come. Spring Hill can be a premier, small, residential, liberal arts. Catholic and Jesuit college. I ask you to look at where we have been, where we are and where we are going and consider what your part can be in realizing the vision for the College on the Hill. SHC Mission Statement Rooted in its Catholic heritage and continuing the 450'year'old Jesuit tradition ofeducational excellence, Spring Hill College prepares students to become responsible leaders in service to others. We offer our students a thor- ough preparation for profession- al excellence. More importantly, we strive to awaken mind and spirit to the pursuit oftruth and to the ever- deepening appreciation ofthe beauty ofcreation, the dignity oflife, the demands ofjustice and the mystery ofGod's love. In our community ofliving and learning, we are committed to the Jesuit tradition of "cura personalis," that is, a care for the spiritual, social and intellectual growth ofeach individual. Through informed dialogue with the world's cultures, religions and peoples, we promote solidarity with the entire human family. And true to the Catholic and Biblical tradition, we nurture both the personal and social dimensions offaith, seeking to draw our students into a deeper and more vital relationship with God. Spring Hill College Compelling Focus The people ofSpring Hill College, in community, work together to nur- ture learning for body, mind and spirit. We take the time and make the effort to teach and act with justice, with care and in the service ofothers. VI
