Q W sinlnK u 1 GRADUATION SPEECH by: JOHN SARSFIELD A few days ago, I was asked to say a few words about the grad class of 1995. I protested that this was rather short notice, and was informed that the original speaker was not able to speak to this august gathering, so I somewhat reluctantly said I would, and, in fact, I am grateful to the grads and Glenn Dickens forthe opportunity to speak to you for a few minutes about the class. I had a decision to make: I would mention each graduate, or I would mention none, and say a few general words about the class as a whole. The safest course was to be general, but I simply could not resist the opportunity to have a gentle go at each ofthe Grads! First ofall, I thought that we had some wonderful fashion statements this year, Eric and Cory vied to see who could wear their pants the lowest on their hips. I don't know - maybe they wanted to make their legs look as short as Pete Beeney and Mike Moore. We have to call the contest a draw since neither ofthem lost their drawers. That Copeman's really is a great fashion place though, isn't it? I mean what about Danny's great hair colour? Nobody had better hairthan that except maybe Bapty! Copeman's didn't have all the fashion plates, though. Look at Bryce "leatherman" Milliken! Some old tunes returned to the Shawnigan hit parade this year. Saralyn was crooning "I only have eyes for you" to a certain grade 1 student, and speaking ofeyes, Ingrid, Colleen, and Andrea, the Bobsey Twins + 1, had smoke getting in theirs in Ingrid's room -just when Ms. Bridge walked in - good move! Some ofthe class made some pretty interestingacademic decisions: Joanna and Tori decided itwas better to play rugby than write AP English and they may have been right. And Drew actually is writing some exams instead ofgoing fishing, like last year! Christina really knows how to study too, especially lookingthrough the windows at Lonsdale's. Some ofour couples were pretty interesting. Susan and Craig re- mained a couple; didn't these two do a lot of'rounds' together? Now that I remember, Craig won the Biology prize last year - maybe they used the rounds forstudying! Jamie got himselfa girl friend this year, and that's the long and short ofthat! And when co-ed rugby comes along, Trevor and Tori will be right in there. Ofcourse, unless that happens in the next year or two, Trevor won't be able to play: they don't let old age pen- sioners play rugby. Do you guys ever wonder what Jason and Eliza actually talk about? I have to give all you couples or potential couples a word ofadvice. At your tender ages, you may wonder what old couples are like forty or fifty years on. Hey -just look at Eric and Andrea! Sports were pretty interesting, too. The Lee guys shone on the basketball court, along with cool hand Luke, and Ada was the Mugsie Bougues ofthe senior girls' team. Ciarra and Colleen co-captained the senior girls to the Islandchampionships involleyball, probably because Ciarra, being the witch she is, put a hex on the other teams. Didn't Brendan also do a performance where he played the devil? Maybe Brendon is the person Ciarra referred to as "My Lord" in her monologue. Kenny worked hard to be like his hero - #23, no, #45, no, #23 - hey, is there a way Jordon can scam even more money? How about Ollie's swimming ability? Everyone rushed to save him - but then they remem- bered his laugh..ah, ok, we'll pull him out. And then there's that golfshark Feizal - this guy had an eagle 2 - there was great elation - he'd turned his game around - until the next time he — played the same hole 9! Some ofthe things I noticed were these: Lisa didn't need her paperbag nearly as much. Julian finally spoke loudly enough for me to hear him in class. Cam mysteriously disappeared from the rugby pitch. Tara finally lost a battle - to me - maybe! Becca learned to spell her name the right way. Erica and Jeffboth got to act their age this year - about seven. Doyoon's religion mustbe practising Kung-fu moves - I mean, why else would he never be in chapel? I've got some predictions foryou: Bryan will run a courier service when he leaves Shawnigan. Stacey will be Governor ofAlaska. Dougwill drive his car better than his GradsupplementdesignedbyColleenSarsfieldand Carly Hall boat. Jennywill play University basketball andwinthe three-point shooting award. Simon will give up tennis and take up rugby or maybe rowing. Justin willbecome the next Annie Liebowitz and his favourite modelwill be Erin. Tamara, Liv and Amber will become the meanest, toughest guys in the valley, having learned their street fighting tactics in the dangerous halls ofGroves house. You think I'm kidding? That cat-burglar and lock picker extrordinaire, Tamara, led a band ofGrovites out to get their Christmas presents back and they outsmarted all ofCopeman's; but, maybe that's not saying much. Mark's smile won't be enough to get him everywhere he wants to go except maybe with Aimee - but then she's got a pretty great smile herself, so it works both ways. While we may not have a singing detective at the school, maybe Aaron will be our first singing computer junkie? Sean will own a MacDonalds' fran- chise, and red meat eater Mike Rimell will be his best customer. Janice will become a recreational tennis instructor, or, failing that, start a line ofdesigner bibs. And Dave Robinson will finally get a mark on a test or assignment he doesn't argue about. I am also going to tell you tonight about some awards that I hear Shawnigan is giving out. The I-think-about-others-first-award goes to Mike Yates. The English Literature class pronun- ciation award goes to Kim, and the school wide enunciation award for 1995 goes to Bryce Bendickson. The robbing-the-cradle award for 1995 goes to Scott. The runner up is Christina. The Viet Nam War and security avoidance medals go to Sarah, Alicia, and Heather for their superb knowl- edge ofShawnigan ditches after hours. Kerstingets the-most boyfriends-in- Duncan award, andTony Redekopp, this year's charismatic leadership award. There.were some other interesting happenings. Andy's theory that playing foozball increases academic ability, seems to have worked, and Graham's academic "JJ success does prove the theory to be true. However, David Gordon-Smith's theory that bungyjumpingwith your ™ motherwill improve your calculus ™"'«. mark has very sadly proven false. ^k A :'^Bfll Ken Chang found himselfin a very mm* .$ tK stressful situation most ofthe year, trying to decide whether to eat pizza i or make a phone call, and what about Vivian-uh-Vincent. Does that guy ever sleep? It seems that some people actually regress at Shawnigan. Having missed ^H ^P* ^^^^B out on having fun in hisjunior years. Damien decided now was the time to ^mi \ have shaving cream wars with the juniors. 1 Hi ' ^Hfl Caius was so busy with his ham radio, he hardly had time all year for ham at r ** breakfast. [ Piers became notjust a Klingon speaker, but a muscular Klingon JHj ^ speaker; in fact I believe that Piers is actually a Klingon. It seems they i * rV5Sx have a different constitution than we do. They get a high from smoking seaweed! Well, you've heard a bit about this stellar graduating class and I've covered everybody I think... Oh no! I nearly forgot...Gemma... Pleeassse GRADUATE! Ladies and gentlemen, I know the graduates will forgive me for poking a bit offun at them... In actual fact, we love them all and they are a fine group ofyoung people. Please, ifyou would, charge your glasses andjoin me in a toast to the Shawnigan Lake School graduating class of 1995! CLOSING DAY SPEECH Dear members of the Board of Governors, staff, guests, and of course the graduating class of 1995, welcome to this year's graduation service. Talking with a staffmember, who shall remain anonymous, about the art ofspeechwriting, she mentioned that the audience enjoys a speech that portrays the characteristics ofthe speaker. So, bearing that in mind, I will try to keep this short. This year, which at times seemed frozen in stillness, has finally come to a close and we find ourselves wishing maybe it had not gone so fast. As a class, we have been together for two years now. For some ofyou, it has been a much longer ride and you have seen many others come and go along the way. We are the survivors and like all survivors, we have learned a thing or two about life. Today, we reach the summit that has been twelve years in the climbing and, although it was a steep climb, we have made it and triumphantly look forward to the next. It is difficult to adequately sum up the range of emotions that are going through us now. Everyone, staff and students, is looking forward to a well-deserved summer. For many of us, it will be the last time we leave Shawnigan's gates as students. Our times here, the good and the bad, I'm sure are all racing through us, leaving us with feelings of nostalgia and perhaps even a few tears. I did not want to stand up here today and give the traditional speech about our Grad class's unbelievable unity. To say this would be hyperbole. Many of us this year have heard the odd person refer to us as "that Grad class". Unfortunately, those are the people who have been missing the forest for the trees. They have failed to see that we are unique and special in our own way. I look before me and I see the 75 faces of our graduating class and in that I find the greatest hope and comfort in the world. All of us possess the spirit of the eagle; the eagle which like a great leader is always seen soaring high and alone. We are perhaps not the closest Grad class to venture out of Shawnigan's gates; however, we have something already inside us more useful than any bond could ever give us. This is our individuality. We are not afraid to stand for who we are or what we believe and I dare say, though we may be nervous about tomorrow, we shall be unafraid to meet it. I hope everyone will find atonement in this too, as we are the leaders oftomorrow, and today we are confident enough to take on that responsibility. This is not to say we do not know the meaning ofunity. On the contrary, we have made friends that will never be forgotten and done things together that will always be remembered. Our only REAL Grad sneak-out is one such memory that we share as does the security man, Mr. Robertson, the rest of the school and anyone else whom we managed to wake at 1:00 in the morning! In hindsight, our feeling of unity that night was perhaps worth the Scottish gentleman's fury the next day! There was another night on a young lady's farm when we again were able to leave behind the hustle and bustle of Shawnigan and melt into the surroundings of sweet country air, laughter, cheerfulness and Molson's Canadian. And for almost all of us here today, family, friends and staff, we have the magical memory of Grad night, where we all joined again for one fabulous night of reminiscences, friends and dance. These times and the million other priceless ones that, as friends, we have shared, make leaving difficult. It is always the good times that we will look back on and when we do meet again, it will be to add another page to our memories of Shawnigan. We are a class full of extraordinary talent and the determination to go with that talent. Our years at Shawnigan have helped to mold us into who we are and we should thank the staff who have laughed, lived and cried with us. Whatwe have learned from you, the staff, goes far beyond any student-teacher relationship. You have been our friends, parents and confidants when we needed help most. Your caring support in and out of class, has equipped us with the tools that I wish so many other students our age could have. To our parents, we owe you more than can be expressed. Thankyou for giving us the roots from which we will grow. To each other, where does the thanking end? Our room-mates and friends with whom we have shared and grown, deserve the greatest thanks of all. Life at Shawnigan is not always easy and none of us could have made it on those lonely nights without that silent friend's gentle pat on the shoulder. If I have a parting word to say, it's only that I hope you are always true to yourself, never settling for anything less than you deserve and always setting your goals higher than the next person's. May we go forward and accomplish our dreams. Thankyou. — Kimberley Mitchell Head of School DANNY ALEXANDER SARALYN ALLISON MEMORIES: My many MEMORIES: Shawnigan's been great.
