Sharh Aqidah al-Awam of Sayyid al-Maliki Al-Kakazai June 3, 2009 The Story of The Poem One of my favourite Aqidah texts is the beginners poem on belief named ‘Aqi- dah al-Awam’ (The common/lay persons belief) wri(cid:308)en by Shaykh Ahmad al- Marzuqi al-Maliki. I obtained a useful commentary on this poem many years ago by the Muhaddith of the Haramayn: Sayyid Muhammad bin Alawi al- Maliki which was transcribed by his student Shaykh Muhammad Ihya Ulum al-DinfromtheteachingofthistextinsacredcityofMakkahinthelate1970’s. I had been puzzled for some time why this wonderful work has seemingly beenignoredbytranslators(notleastasitisthefirsttextstudiedbystudentsof knowledgeinmanypartsoftheMuslimworld)whilstothermoredetailedand complexworkshavebeentranslatedandofferedtotheEnglishspeakingpublic. Ipraythatwehavethetawfiqtobeabletopresentallofthisbriefcommentary onthisblogintheupcomingmonths,Ameen. Pleasefindbelowanextractfrom pg 11(cid:0)12 of Sayyid Malikis commentary compiled by his wonderfully named student(MuhammadIhyaUlumal-Din). Thecommentarystates: The Reason For the Composition of This Poem Auniquestoryisreportedfromtheauthorregardingthereasonforhiscompos- ingthispoemwhichwewillmakementionof,anditis: Theauthor(Allahhavemercyonhim)sawtheProphet(Allahblesshimand give him peace) and his companions (Allah be pleased with them) standing aroundhim(inadream). He(Allahblesshimandgivehimpeace)saidtohim: Recite the poem of al-Tawhid which whomsoever memo- rizesitwillenterparadise,andwilla(cid:308)ainallthatisdesired from every good which is in conformity with the Book and theSunnah. Hesaidtohim: WhatisthatpoemOMessengerofAllah? TheCompanionssaidtohim: 1 Listen to the Messenger of Allah to what he says. The Mes- senger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: Sayنِ مٰ حْ رَّلاوَ هِللامِ سْ ِبُٔادَ بَْٔا Sohesaid: نِ مٰ حْ رَّلاوَ هِللامِ سْ ِبُٔادَ بَْٔا Toitsendwhicharehiswords: مِ يلِعَْلامِ كَ حَ ْلامَُالكَ اهَيفِ مِ يلِكَ ْلاوَ لِ يلِخَ ْلافُ حُ صُ وَ WhilsttheMessengerofAllah(Allahblesshimandgivehimpeace)waslisten- ing to him. When he awoke from his sleep he recited that which he had seen inhisdreamandfoundthatitwaspreservedwithhimfromitsbeginningtoits end. He then saw the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) a second timeinadreamatthetimebeforedawn,theProphet(Allahblesshimandgive himpeace)saidtohim: Recite that which you have gathered (meaning in your heart). Sohereciteditfromitsbeginningtoitsendwhilststandinginfrontofhim(Allah blesshimandgivehimpeace)andhiscompanionsstandingaroundhimsaying: ‘Ameen’ a(cid:286)er every verse of this poem. When he had completed his recitation theProphet(Allahblesshimandgivehimpeace)said: May Allah (the Exalted) give you success to that which pleases Him, and accept that from you, and bless you and thebelievers,andbenefittheslavesbyit,Ameen. The author was then questioned a(cid:286)er people came to know of the poem, so he answeredtheirquestion,andaddedtoitthepoemfromhiswords: لُ وبُقَْلاوَ مُ يلِسْ تَّلاهُقُّحَ فَ لُ وسُ رَّلاهِِبىتََٔاامَ لُّ ُك untiltheendofthepoem. Thisiswhattheauthorhasinformedregardinghim- self, and we have conveyed it exactly, and the responsibility is upon the narra- tor. Introduction Please find below the Introduction along with its commentary. I have omit- ted the inclusion of the discussion surrounding individual words which can be found in the commentary for a number of reasons. Inshallah perhaps they can beincorporatedinthefuture. ميحرلانمحرلاهللامسب ماوعلاةديقع 2 Theauthor(Allahhavemercyonhim)said: نِ اسَ حْ إِلْامِ ِئادَ مِ يحِ رَّلاِبوَ نِ مٰ حْ رَّلاوَ هِللامِ سْ ِبُٔادَ بَْٔا IbegininthenameofAllah,andmostmerciful, compassionate,eternallykind Commentary: I begin the writing of this poem ‘Aqidah al-Awam’ with the bas- malah seeking help from Allah (لج و زع) whose mercy has encompassed every- thing, and whose bestowing and blessings are continuous without break nor decrease. First: Followingthenoblebookinitsordernotinitssequenceofrevelation. Second: Acting upon that which has come from the Prophet (Allah bless him andgivehimpeace)that: Every important ma(cid:308)er which is not begun with bismillah al-rahmanal-raheemiscutoff(meaningdeficientandoflit- tle good and blessing). [al-Khatib from Abu Hurayrah in a Marfuform] Third: FollowingtheProphet(Allahblesshimandgivehimpeace)whowould beginhiswritingsandle(cid:308)erswiththebasmalahashascomeinhis(Allahbless him and give him peace) le(cid:308)er to Harqal and others. The author Allah have mercyonhimsaid: لِ وُّحَ تَ َالِبىقِابَْلارِخِ ٓالْاوَ لِ ؤََّالْامِ يدِ قَْلاهِلِلدُ مْ حَ ْلافَ AllpraiseisforAllah,WithoutBeginning,theFirstand theLast,Everlastingwithoutchange Commentary: I also begin adding to the writing of this poem with praise for Him, meaning by Praise for Allah with the tongue, the Without Beginning, the First, the Last, the Everlasting. Along with honouring Him and believing that allpraiseisestablishedforHim. First: ActingbyHis(Allahblesshimandgivehimpeace)words: Every important ma(cid:308)er not begun with praise for Allah is cut off [Abu Dawud and others and graded Hasan by Ibn al-Salah] Second: Fulfillingtherightofathingwhichisincumbentuponhimwhichisex- pressingthanksforblessingsfromamongstwhichistheauthoringofthispoem. Theauthor(Allahhavemercyonhim)said: ادَ حَّ وَ دْ قَ نْ مَ رِيْخَ ىِّ بِنَّلاىلَعَ ادَ مَرْسَ مَُالسَّ لاوَ ةُولَصَّ لامَّ ُث Thenpeaceandblessingsbecontinuouslyuponthe messenger,bestofthosewhoaffirmedtheoneness عْ دِ تَبمُ رَيْغَ قِّ حَ ْلانِ يدِ لَ يبِسَ عْ بِتَ نْ مَوَ هِبِحْ صَ وَ هِِلٓاوَ AndHisfamily,Hiscompanionsandthosewhofollow thepathofthetruereligionwithoutinnovation 3 Commentary: Then I send blessings and peace upon our Master Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) the best of all of those who affirm divine oneness, and upon his family, companions and those that follow them on the pathofthetruereligionwithgoodnesstillthelastday. Actinguponthatwhich isreportedfromhim(Allahblesshimandgivehimpeace)thathesaid: Every important ma(cid:308)er which is not begun with the praise ofAllah,andblessingsuponme,itiscutoffanddevoidofall blessings [al-Qadir al-Rahawi in ‘al-Arbain’. Al-Haithaimi said its chain was weak, however it is in on virtues (fadail) andtheweakisacteduponinitalongwithitsconditions] Benefit: Imamal-Shafi(Allahhavemercyonhim)said: I like it that a person should precede his speech (khutbah) and every ma(cid:308)er he seeks with the praise of Allah (the Exalted) glorifying Him (Glorified and Exalted is He) and sendingblessingsupontheMessengerofAllah(Allahbless himandgivehimpeace). 1 Regarding the A(cid:308)ributes of Allah (the Exalted) (ThatwhichisnecessarywithregardstoHimtheExalted—Thatwhichispos- sible with regards to Him the Exalted — That which is impossible with regard toHimtheىلاعت) 1.1 That which is necessary with regards to Him the Exalted TheauthorAllahhavemercyonHimsaid: ةًفَصِ نَ يرِشْ عِ هَِّلِلبٍ جِ اوَ نْ مِ ةِفَرِعْمَ ْلابِ وْجُ وُِبمْ لَعْ افَ دُ عْبَوَ A(cid:286)er,knowthenecessityofknowingthetwenty a(cid:308)ributeswhicharenecessaryforAllah قِ الَطْ إِلْاِبقِ لْخَ لِْلفٌ ِلاخَ مُ يقِابَ مٌ يدِ قَ دٌ وجُ وْمَ هَُّللافَ SoAllahhasexistence,withoutbeginning,everlasting, differentfromthecreationabsolutely ٍءيْ شَ لِّ كُ ِبمٌ ِلاعَ دٌ يرِمُ رٌدِ اقَ يْ حَ وَ دٌ حِ اوَوَ يٌّ نِغَ مٌ ِئاقَوَ SelfSubsistingwithoutanyneed,theOneandthe Living,Powerful,Willing,Knowerofeverything مُ ظِ تَنتَ ةٌعَبْسَ تٌ افَصِ هَُلمُ ِّلكَ تَمُ ْلاوَ رُيصِ بَْلاعٌ يمِ سَ AllHearing,AllSeeingandSpeaking,Hehasseven a(cid:308)ributeswhichconsist 4 رُمَ تَسْ ِٕامُ الَكَ مُ لْعِْلاةٌايَحَ رٌصَ بَ عٌ مْ سَ ةٌدَارَِٕاةٌرَدْ قُفَ SotheyarePower,Will,HearingandSeeing,Life, Knowledge,Speechwhichiscontinuous Commentary: It is compulsory upon every responsible person to know from thea(cid:308)ributesofAllahthosewhicharenecessarywithregardstoHim: Whichis thatwhoseabsencetheintellectcannotcomprehend. ThatwhichisimpossiblewithregardstoHim: Whichiswhoseexistencethe intellectcannotcomprehend. And the permissible: Which with regards to Him is that which is correct for theintellecttocomprehendtheexistenceandabsenceof. Likewise it is compulsory for him to know the likes of it with regards to the Messengers(uponthemblessingsandpeace). Theauthorbeganintheseverses by mentioning that which is necessary with regards to Him (ىلاعت), and they are twentya(cid:308)ributesdetailedasfollows: 1. Existence: Meaning the establishment (thubut) of a thing. It is certainly nec- essaryforHim(ىلاعت)duetoHisessenceandnotdueacause,meaningthatother thanHimhasnoteffected/causedHis(ىلاعت)existence. Asforexistencewhichisotherthanfromtheessence(ghairdhati)suchasour existence, then it is by His (ىلاعت) action. The evidence for this is the existence of thiscreation,forifitwasnotforHim(GlorifiedandExaltedisHe)therewould benothingfromthecreation(inexistence). He(ىلاعت)said: Verily! I am Allah, There is no god except Me, so worship Me[Ta-Ha:14] AndHe(ىلاعت)said: Do they not think deeply about themselves, Allah has cre- ated not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them,exceptwithtruthandforanappointedterm. Andin- deed many of mankind deny the Meeting with their Lord. [al-Rum:8] ThedesertArabwasaskedregardingtheproof,hereplied: Thedroppingspointtothe(existence)ofthecamelanddon- key, and the footsteps to the traveller. So the heavens con- taining stars, and the earth with its mountain passes, and oceansandwithitswaves,dotheynotpointtowardsawise, powerful,allknowingcreator? 2. Without Beginning: It is the absence of a beginning to His (ىلاعت) existence. Meaning that He (ىلاعت) has no beginning to His existence because He (هنٔاش لج) is the origin (masdar) of this universe, and creator of all that exists. Therefore He mustprecedeitall,andnothingprecedesHim(ىلاعت). He(ىلاعت)said: 5 He is the First and the Last , the Most High and the Most Near. AndHeistheAll-Knowerofeverything[al-Hadid:3] 3. Everlasting: It is His (ىلاعت) existence not coming to an end, meaning that He (ىلاعت)iscontinuallyexistentwithoutlimit,andeverlastingwithoutend. He(ىلاعت) said: Everyone in it is annihilating and there only continues the FaceofyourLordtheOwnerofMajestyandGenerosity[al- Rahman:26-27] AndHe(ىلاعت)said: Everything will perish save His Face. His is the Decision, andtoHimyou(all)shallbereturned. [al-Qasas:88] 4. His(ىلاعت)NonResemblancetoAllEvents: Itisthedissimilarityofanycreated thingtoHim(ىلاعتوهناحبس),He(ىلاعت)said: There is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is All HearingandAllSeeing. [al-Shura:11] AndHe(ىلاعت)said: AndthereisnonelikeuntoHim. [al-Ikhlas:4] 5. His (ىلاعت) Subsisting by Himself: It is the absence of His needing a place in which he resides or location in which he dwells, or someone to bring Him into existence. RatherHeiswithoutneedofallthatisotherthanHim. He(ىلاعت)said: (All)facesshallbehumbledbefore(Him)—theLiving,the Self-Subsisting[Ta-Ha:111] He(ىلاعت)said: O mankind! It is you that have need of God: but God is the OneFreeofallwants,worthyofallpraise. [Fatir:15] He(ىلاعت)said: ForGodisfreeofallneedsfromallcreation[al-Ankabut:6] 6. Oneness: It is the absence of a multiplicity in His (ىلاعت) essence (dhat), At- tributes(sifat)andActions(afal). Themeaningofonenessoftheessenceis: ThatHisessenceisnotconstructed fromparts,andthatHehasnopartnerinHisdominion. The meaning of oneness in a(cid:308)ributes is: That no one has an a(cid:308)ribute which resemblesanyofHisa(cid:308)ributes. Themeaningoftheonenessofactionsis: ThatnooneotherthanHim(ىلاعت)has any action. For Allah is the creator of everything and originator of everything, andHe(ىلاعت)isindependentincreatingandoriginating. He(ىلاعت)said: 6 Glory be to Him! He is God, the One, the Irresistible. [al- Zumar:4] He(ىلاعت)said: And your God is One God: There is no god but He, Most Gracious,MostMerciful. [al-Baqarah:163] He(ىلاعت)said: Say: HeisGod,theOneandOnly[al-Ikhlas:1] He(ىلاعت)said: If there were, in them both other gods besides God, there wouldhavebeenconfusioninboth! [al-Anbiyah:22] He(ىلاعت)said: NosondidGodbeget,noristhereanygodalongwithHim: (if there were many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have lorded it over others! Glory to God! (He is free) from the (sortof)thingstheya(cid:308)ributetoHim[al-Muminun:91] 7. Power: Itisabeginninglessa(cid:308)ributeestablishedinHis(ىلاعت)essencebywhich Hebringsintoexistenceandnonexistence. IndeedGodhaspoweroverallthings. [al-Nur:45] He(ىلاعت)said: Nor is God to be frustrated by anything whatever in the heavens or on earth: for He is All-Knowing. All-Powerful. [Fatir:44] 8. Will: Itisabeginninglessa(cid:308)ributeestablishedinHis(ىلاعت)essencebywhich He specifies that which is possible with that which is possible for Him. For He (ىلاعت و هناحبس) can dispose in the universe in accordance to his volition, will and wisdom. SoHemaymakethistallorshort,beautifulorugly,knowledgeableor ignorantinthisplaceorinanother. He(ىلاعت)said: FortoanythingwhichWehavewilled,Webutsaytheword, “Be”,anditis. [al-Nahl:40] He(ىلاعت)said: Your Lord does create and choose as He pleases: no choice havethey(inthema(cid:308)er): GlorytoGod! andfarisHeabove thepartnerstheyascribe(toHim)! [al-Qasas:68] He(ىلاعت)said: 7 Say: “O God! Lord of Power (And Rule), You give power to whom You please, and You strip off power from whom Youplease: Youbestowhonourwhomyoupleases,andyou disgracewhomyouplease: InYourhandisallgood. Verily, overallthingsYouhavepower. [Aal-Imran:26] He(ىلاعت)said: ToAllahbelongsthedominionoftheheavensandtheearth. He creates what He wills. He bestows (children) male or femaleaccordingtoHisWill,OrHebestowsbothmalesand females, and He leaves barren whom He will: for He is full ofKnowledgeandPower. [al-Shura:49-50] 9. Knowledge: Itisabeginninglessa(cid:308)ributeestablishedinHis(ىلاعت)essenceby whichHeknowsthings. He(ىلاعت)said: Godhasfullknowledgeofallthing. [al-Mujadilah:7] He(ىلاعت)said: God comprehends, all things in (His) Knowledge. [al- Talaq:12] He(ىلاعت)said: It was We Who created man, and We know what dark sug- gestions his soul makes to him: for We are nearer to him than(his)jugularvein. [Qaf:16] 10. Life: It is a beginning less a(cid:308)ribute of His essence which it is correct to a(cid:308)ribute with Power, Will, Knowledge, Hearing, Seeing and Speech. For if He (ىلاعت) was not living these a(cid:308)ributes would not be established for Him. He (ىلاعت) said: And put your trust in Him Who lives and dies not [al- Furqan:58] He(ىلاعت)said: He is the Living (One): There is no god but He: Call upon Him,givingHimsinceredevotion. [Ghafir:65] 11-12. Hearing and Sight: They are both beginning less a(cid:308)ributes established inHis(ىلاعت)essencebywhichthatwhichexistsisrevealed. ForAllah(ىلاعت)isAll Hearing, and hears everything even the creeping of a black ant over a smooth rock during a dark night. He is All Seeing, viewing everything with a sight whichisincludesallthatcanbecomprehended. He(ىلاعت)said: God has indeed heard the statement of the woman who pleads with thee concerning her husband and carries her complaint (in prayer) to God: and God (always) hears the arguments between both sides among you: for God hears andsees(allthings)[al-Mujadilah:1] 8 He(ىلاعت)said: Go, both of you, to Fir’aun (Pharaoh), verily, he has trans- gressed, And speak to him mildly, perhaps he may accept admonition or fear Allah. They said: “Our Lord! Verily! Wefearlestheshouldhastentopunishusorlestheshould transgress(allboundsagainstus).He(Allah)said: “Fearnot, verily! Iamwithyouboth,hearingandseeing. [Taha:43-46] 13. Speech: Itisabeginninglessa(cid:308)ributeestablishedinHisessence,itisneither le(cid:308)ernorsound,indicatingtoallthatisknown. He(ىلاعت)said: AndtoMosesGodspokedirect[al-Nisa:164] He(ىلاعت)said: When Moses came to the place appointed by Us, and his Lordspoketohim,[al-Araf:143] He(ىلاعت)said: It is not fi(cid:308)ing for a man that Allah should speak to him exceptbyinspiration[al-Shura:51] If Power, Will, Knowledge, Life, Hearing, Sight, Speech are necessary for Him (ىلاعت), then it is natural that the following a(cid:308)ributes also be necessary for Him, andtheyare: 14. ThatHeisPowerful 15. ThatHeisWilling 16. ThatHeisKnowledgeable 17. ThatHeisLiving 18. ThatHeisAllHearing 19. ThatHeisAllSeeing 20. ThatHeisSpeaking Thesetwentya(cid:308)ributesaresubdividedintofourcategories: 1. A(cid:308)ributes of Self (Sifah al-Nafsiyyah): Linked/related to the self, meaning theessence. Thea(cid:308)ributeoftheselfisthatwhichtheessencecannotberationally conceivedofbeingwithout,anditisone: Existence. 2. A(cid:308)ributes of Negating (Sifat al-Salbiyyah): Linked/related to [the term] negating, meaning nullifying. They are named negating because they negate from Allah (Exalted) that which does not befit His Majesty. And they are five: 9 Without beginning, Everlasting, Non resemblance to all events, Self Subsisting, andOneness. 3. A(cid:308)ributes of Meaning (Sifat al-Maani): They are named as ‘Meaning’ be- cause they affirm for Allah (Exalted) meanings existing and established in His essence befi(cid:308)ing His perfection, and they are seven: Power, Will, Knowledge, Life,Hearing,Seeing,Speech. 4. A(cid:308)ributesPertainingtoMeaning(Sifatal-Manawiyyah): Linked/relatedto theseven(a(cid:308)ributes)ofmeaningofwhichtheyareabranch. Theyarenamedas ‘pertainingtomeaning’becausetheyarenecessarilyfollowfromthemeanings. TheyarethatHeis: Powerful,Willing,Knowledgeable,Living,AllHearing,All Seeing,Speaking. The wisdom in mentioning these ‘a(cid:308)ributes pertaining to meaning’ despite their being included in the aforementioned ‘a(cid:308)ributes of meaning’ are the fol- lowing: • Mentioning the beliefs in a detailed manner, because the danger of igno- ranceinitisgreat. • ArefutationofMutazilah,astheydenythem. 1.2 That Which Is Possible In Regards To Allah (ىلاعت) Theauthorsaid: هِلِعْفِكَ نٍ كِ مْ مُ لِّ كُ ِلكٌ رْتَ هِِلدْ عَ وَ هِلِضْ فَِبزٌِئاجَ وَ AndconceivablewithHisgraceandjusticeistoleaveevery possiblema(cid:308)er,likedoingit Commentary: ThatwhichispossibleinregardstoAllah(ىلاعت)isthedoingofall thatispossibleoritsbeingle(cid:286). Thereforeitiscompulsoryuponeverylegallyre- sponsiblepersontobelievethatitispossibleforAllah(ىلاعت)tocreateandchoose fromHiscreationasHewishes. NothingiscompulsoryinHimbecauseHeisthe absolute disposer, and no one has any choice with Him, because in His hands are all ma(cid:308)ers, the good and the bad. Thus He gives and prevents, honours and debases, benefits and harms, forgives and punishes, rewards and takes to account. He(ىلاعت)said: AndYourLordcreateswhatsoeverHewillsandchooses,nochoicehavethey (inanyma(cid:308)er). [Al-Qasas:68] AndHe(ىلاعت)said: Say (O Messenger of Allah): “O Allâh! Possessor of the kingdom, You give the Kingdom to whom You will, and You take the Kingdom from whom You will, and You endue with honour whom You will, and You humiliate whom You will. In Your Hand is the good. Verily, You are Able to do All things. You make the night to enter into the day, and You make the Day to enter into the 10
