Tribute to Ernesto Lecuona w/Michel Camilo 7 DEAR MUSIC LOVERS Thank you all—musicians, SFJAZZ members, patrons, press—for giving SFJAZZ the opportunity to joyously ~ celebrate the milestone of our 5th Just 3 blocks away! Season in the SFJAZZ Center. This is a proud moment for us all—a time to reflect on what has been achieved, but more importantly to look forward and build on what has been accomplished. As we neared the opening of the Center in January 2013, I was often asked how it would feel to see SFJAZZ’s dream of a dedicated building for jazz finally come to life: “You must be very proud.” The reply was, “Yes it will be a great accomplishment for us, but I can give you a better answer in 3 to 5 years.” The creation of the SFJAZZ Center was a risk—was it possible to create a cultural institution, for jazz, here in San Francisco? It’s now time for the answer, and it looks like the gamble has worked out 59 9th Street and you, our audience, have made it work: SFJAZZ membership has quadrupled since we broke ground—from 3,000 to over 12,000 members; 90% of all shows have sold (between Market & Mission) out; 35,000 students have been reached through our education programs; and over (415) 500-7788 San Francisco, CA 94103 500,000 tickets have been sold. theperennialsf.com We all have built a community center that has been generously received by San Franciscans and jazz fans, and we don’t intend to stand still. Our values of openness, Monday - Saturday looking forward, presenting the highest levels of art, and community building are Bar opens at 3:00pm Dining Room at 5:30pm the foundation for our growth. We will be announcing a number of new initiatives in the coming 12 months. Following are three examples: a partnership with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, who is launching a jazz studies program for the 2017-18 academic year with the SFJAZZ Collective as the core faculty; radio broadcasts of “Live from the SFJAZZ Center” starting this fall on the French public radio station France Musique, with more stations to follow; and we just became an official “Curator” for Apple Music, providing our point of view on jazz. This might just be the most sustainable restaurant in We are proud to present to you Season 5! The schedule is full of “only-at-SFJAZZ” America. And guess what? experiences that we hope will inspire you. Thank you for your support. We are here - Bon Appétit It’s really good too. because of you, and we look forward to continuing to grow with you. Randall Kline SFJAZZ Founder & Executive Artistic Director 8 DID YOU KNOW? SFJAZZ Members SAVE 10% when purchasing 10 or more tickets “ We wanted to create a community gathering place around jazz. A place where jazz can do what it’s always done—grow and change. Now there’s a permanent place in San Francisco where it can flourish.” —RANDALL KLINE TICKETS Members 415.788.7353 • Public 866.920.5299 • SFJAZZ.org 9 DEAR FRIEND OF SFJAZZ Welcome to SFJAZZ and the opening of Season 5! Time certainly flies! Many of you OFFICERS were here just a few seasons ago for the Michael Mauzé, Chair SFJAZZ Center’s inaugural season in 2013, Tony Harris, Vice Chair and now our fifth anniversary is just around Brian E. Hollins, Treasurer the corner. Your support for the artists who perform on our stages continues to be Timothy Stultz, Secretary phenomenal, and together we are able to TRUSTEES present this fabulous musical journey with hundreds of musicians exploring the many Michael Bell facets of jazz. Terry Berkemeier John Botti At the beginning of a new season we’re Sam Britton again reminded how resolute we must be to keep the SFJAZZ experience at a level that meets your expectations, as well as just how large a contingent of working artists and Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr. teachers we work with in the course of nine months. With new artists coming into the Center Charles Charnas each week from near and far—literally from around the world—we have only a brief chance Jack Conte to experience their interpretation of the music we all call jazz. SFJAZZ doesn’t have a single Bruce Cozadd orchestra for you to come to know, but rather each week, week by week, we hope you Timothy Dattels engage with the best musicians and music presented anywhere. Donald W. Derheim Jazz, we believe, is constantly evolving, and we make every effort to not only present David C. Drummond a wide swath of music on our stages but to also bring jazz into the community through Mark Dubovoy classroom instruction, outreach, hands on master classes, a community band, and both Kate Duhamel a High School All-Stars Big Band and Combo. You can find information on all of these Mark Edmunds programs in this book. Daniel Handler William A. Holodnak The SFJAZZ experience is not only what you come to see, but it’s also how you participate. Jimmy Hormel We have improved our email communications and hope you have added Bannus Hudson [email protected] to your address book. Every Tuesday we prepare and send the Zakir Hussain news of the week— sometimes with added shows, discounts and special offers. Randall Kline In other tech news, we are the first jazz organization to partner with Apple Music as a John Santos Curator. Our page is loaded with exclusive playlists that allow you to take the SFJAZZ Joseph L. Sherman experience with you, anywhere in the world. Denise Young Smith Greg Stern We have also made improvements to our tech systems, and I encourage you to download Jon Streeter the SFJAZZ app that allows you to use your smartphone to select, purchase and attend shows without ever turning a page or printing out a ticket. And speaking of your phone, Sanjay Vaswani thank you for keeping the ringers off and phones out of sight during the performance. The HONORARY MEMBERS artists and your fellow audience members appreciate your courtesy! Clinton Gilbert, Co-Founder Thank you for coming to the show, and I look forward to joining you for many more nights Shirley Read-Jahn of great jazz. Donald W. Derheim SFJAZZ Chief Executive Officer 10
