What is public health?
• Public health is what we do collectively as a society
to assure conditions in which people can be healthy
(IOM)
• Role of public health:
Prevent epidemics and spread of disease

Protect against environmental hazards
o
Prevent injuries
o
Promote and encourage healthy behavior
o
Respond to disasters and assist communities
o
Assure quality and accessibility of health services
