More precisely, Sert.ois used for Syriac which is the variant of Aramaic spoken since the second centuryAD.1 Syriac used other alphabets as well, notably Es.trangelo, which is not (yet) con- tainedinthispackage. SinceSert.oisastheArabicalphabetasyllabicscript,vow- elsaremarkedbydiacriticmarksabove(orunder)theconsonanticletters. Modern formsofAramaicstilluseeitherSert.o,theChaldeanalphabetorEst.rangelo. Since Syriac split up in two main dialects in the fifth century AD, two differ- ing systems of vowel-marking were established: Whereas the western dialect (Edessean)usedGreeklettersasvowelsymbols(thesearetheonlyonesprovided by this package for the time being), the eastern dialects uses dots to indicate the vowels(Chaldeanvowels). This package enables you to typeset words or paragraphs in Sert.o using a pre- processorwhichchoosesthecorrectletterformdependingoncontext. Inorderto typesetparagraphstheuseofarecentversionofpdflatexisneeded,whichcan handle the right-to-left typesetting. For older version of LATEX, the preprocessor mustbeusedwiththeoption-o(seesection3). ThispackagealsoincludedanadaptedversionofaChaldeanfont(thankstoTony Khoshaba,whoputthisfonttotheWeb). 2 The alphabets EveryletterinSert.o(andsomelettersintheChaldeanalphabet)hasseveralforms, dependingonitspositionintheword: Aninitial,medialorfinalform. Sincesome letters do not connect to the following letter, there are isolated forms as well (i.e. aletterwhichisnotconnectedtotherightnortheleft). Thecodingcolumninthe following table refers to the preprocessor described below (section 3). To have the vowel symbol written in inversed form under the consonant, user upper caseinput. ATTENTION: I had to change the coding of zqa¯p¯a¯ (_¨) from o to =a in order to accomodate the new letter ă_ (coding o). In texts encoded up to version 0.4 o has to be replaced by =a Sorry for any inconveniances. 2The beg¯adkep¯at are not yet always processed. In general, the doubling of the consonant ¯ ¯ creates a Bk¨Ź¨˚Ť˝ qusˇsˇa¯ya¯ in the syriac text and does not change the transliteration. The transliteration can be defined in the table used by the preprocessor serto.font and assyr.font. The current definition uses the transcription as shown in the tables in sections 2.1 and 2.2, with the exception of long vowels. For thetimebeingIproposeapreprocessor(writtenin PYTHON4)andpdflatex. I’mwellawarethatserto.pyisnotpartofthemostbeautifulpiecesofsoftware code,onthecontrary,it’sratherspaghetticode. Manythingscouldhavebeenina more intelligent way, but it works, which is the most important thing. If you find thetimetoimproveitpleaseshareyourchangeswithme! 3.1 Using the preprocessor ThepreprocessoriscalledwiththeLATEX-fileasargument: serto.py [-o] ppfilename.tex > filename.tex The resulting LATEX-file can be LATEXed as usually. Please make sure to have the \usepackage{serto}includedinyourpreamble. The option -o is necessary if you use an older version of LATEX which is not capable to typeset texts from the right to the left (TeX--XeTextension). The -o -option tells the preprocessor to inverse the letters on its own. Since in transliteration a “neutral vowel” is needed, which does not appear in Sert.o, the code @ can be used: <ST>ˆs@m=a‘</ST> produces Ĺw¨ Žsˇema¯(cid:44) For multiple lines, start a block using <SERTO>5 in a line on its own. This block can be closed by </SERTO>. If you need transliterated Syriac, use </TRANS> and</TRANS>. Thecommands<SERTO>/</SERTO>and</TRANS>/</TRANS> donotworkproperlywiththe-ooptionofthepreprocessorandandolderLATEX. If you add TEX-commands in these blocks, a right-to-left typesetting version of LATEXisobligatory.
