Age-relatedmaculardegeneration,diabeticretinopathy,andglaucomaarethemain causesofblindnessinbothdevelopedanddevelopingcountries.Thecostofblindness tosocietyandindividualsishuge, andmanycasescanbeavoidedbyearlyintervention. Early and reliable diagnosis strategies and effective treatments are therefore a world priority. At the same time, there is mounting research on the retinal vasculature and neuro-retinalarchitectureasasourceofbiomarkersforseveralhigh-prevalencecondi- tions like dementia, cardiovascular disease, and, of course, complications of diabetes. Automaticandsemi-automaticsoftwaretoolsforretinalimageanalysisarebeingused widely in retinal biomarkers research, and increasingly percolating into clinical prac- tice.Significantchallengesremainintermsofreliabilityandvalidation, numberandtype ofconditionsconsidered,multi-modalanalysis(e.g.,fundus,opticalcoherencetomog- raphy, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy), novel imaging technologies, and the effective transferofadvancedcomputervisionandmachinelearningtechnologies, tomentiona few.Theworkshopaddressedalltheseaspectsandmore, intheidealinterdisciplinary contextofMICCAI. Thisworkshopaimedtobringtogetherscientists,clinicians,andstudentsfrommul- tiple disciplines in the growing ophthalmic image analysis community, such as elec- tronicengineering, computerscience, mathematics, andmedicine, todiscussthelatest advancementsinthefield.Atotalof33full-lengthpapersweresubmittedtothework- shopinresponsetothecallforpapers.Allsubmissionsweredouble-blindpeer-reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee.
