They are of paramount importance in various fields of fluid mechanics including vehicles efficiency, technical branches bound up with gas/liquid flows, atmospheric effect on various constructions, etc. The future progress in these fields is associated, in a large measure, with the extend of knowledge of the physics of separated flows and jets, achievements in the oretical approaches and calculations as well as development of perfect control techniques. These aspects were in focus of IUTAM-Symposium which was held in Novosibirsk, 1990. About 120 presentations and well guided general discussions which took place indicated wide in terest to the themes of the Meeting. The volume is composed of the contributions arranged according to their place in the scientific programme of the Symposium. Thus, the following main sections may be distinguished, conditionally to some ex tent: numerical simulations and theoretical approaches - general aspects, incompressible turbulent boundary layer separation, shock waves/turbulent boundary layer interactions, control tech niques, laminar separation and instability, organized structures in jets, separated flows and mixing layers. Surely, inspite of great number of contributions the material do not exhaust all the problems associated with separated and jet flows, but gives insight into the main research fields. An interested reader will find here the state of the art, the leading trends and will be given a chance to avaluate the progress achieved since the pre vious IUTAM-Symposium on Boundary Layer Separation, London,19B6.
