Affected individuals mostly report unpleasant sensations of itching, burning, and stinging with exposure to various skin care products and/or environmental factors. In some western counties, as high as 50% of women and a 33% of men report various degrees of skin sensitivity affecting their quality of life. New developments and research over the past few years have shed light on some aspects of underlying pathomechanisms, yet there is much to be learned. Correct clinical categorization of patients is key for clinical management and focused research. Currently, the diagnosis is clinical and based on constella- tion of symptoms, suggesting the diagnosis of sensitive skin syndrome; however, patients may, in fact, be affected with more than one syndrome/condition. Work of astute clinicians and directed research can further elucidate involved mechanisms and provide management solutions. We hope that this book provides a comprehensive overview on the main physiological basis of skin reactivity, as well as underlying pathomechanisms associated with sensitive skin and management options. We sincerely thank all the authors, editors, and publisher, in particular, Mr. Robert Peden, Ms. Adel Rosario, and Ms. Judith Simon for their generous contributions. We also thank our readers in advance and appreciate any comments, corrections, and suggestions for future editions of this book. Golara Honari Rosa M. Andersen Howard Maibach vii Contributors Rosa M.
