Shield: Quarterin~s Or; Scroll outline Or, with ground Argent. Lettering Gules. Entire shield of Escutcheon Or. · SYMBOLISM The Escutcheon is'.guartered. On the left base there is the unchangeable five point silver star with golaen rays, symbolic of fidelity to its purpose of shedding ligbt and guidance in the pursuit of Him Who enlightens every man and Who is the "Bright and Morning Star". (Apoc XXII.116). · I The upper left bears the Cross, the emblem of tria)'s and difficulties. It is in gold on a silver grou,nd, symbolic of the preciot,1s outcome of trials well borne: These two symbols combine to produce che CoUege motto: "Fidelitas in Arduis" (Fidelity ·-- in Difficulties). . . • On the upper right quarter. 'there is the D~ve in silver, ~;mbolic of the Holy Ghost, frqrn which descend seven goldeh rays, the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, essential in the_ practice of "Fidelitas in Arduis". · . l The right bas~ bears a red heart transfixed with a sword and encircled with golden ).'OS es. This is1symbolic of the Holy Heart of Mary, suffering- the supreme purely human cype of "Fidelitas in Arduis". The golden roses symbolise the reward th.1t come from such fidelity. ' Three EDITORIAL For all who are part of St. Mary's - students, teachers, parents and members of the religious community - the memory of Fergus Kelly who died so tragically during the school year under review in this Annual will always remain vibrant, life-giving and always new. Despite the deep and,,genuine grief we experienced when he died, we are also filled with gratitude that we knew him. And in knowing him, we were inevitably led to love, admire and respect him. With pride and affection, we dedicate this edition of the Annual to Fergus' memory. The Comfnunity had the happiness of celebrating the Diamond .Tubilee of the Religious Profession of Fr. Martin Maiben. Fr. Cyril Byrne and Fr. William Nugent kept their Golden .Tubilees and Fr. Peter Raftery his Silver Jubilee. We were happy to welcome Fr. Francis Barry back to St. Mary's amt we prayed for Fr. James McNulty during his period of serious illness and rejoiced at his recovery. _Fr. William Maher's monumental A History of St. Mary's College Rathmines, Dublin 1890 - 1990 was published. He is to be warmly :eongratulated _on his great achievement. A wealth of detail, a profusion of photographs and Fr. Maher's impeccable English all combine to provide ' us with a mo-st interesting book. · The tradition of th~, school opera continued into Us twelfth year. This year · we 'were delighted to welcome the gids of St. Louis High School who joined our'students to presfnl. a very enjoyable version of The Mil!:ado. S~hipr .. The'./act that the Cup Team and the Junior Cup Team were both eliminated from their tespective competitions at a comparatively early stage can someti~es mean· ilfat less than adequate tribute is paid to their efforts, their dedication, their observa11ce of the highest standards ofp lay on the field and of sportsmanlike conduct off it. To all the players on all the teams and to all t~f!ir dedicated and generous trainers, ;we gladly pay this tribute. The Maher, Pirie, Hickson '.and O 'Loughlin families all lost loved ones during the 1994-1995 school year.
