SENATOR JACK GORDON
The Papers of Senator Jack Gordon were given to the University
Archives of FIU in 1993. These records document his work with
the Dade county School Board and his service to Florida as a
member of the Florida State Senate.
Senator Jack Gordon was born in Detroit Michigan on June 3, 1922
and educated at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1942.
From 1943 to 1946 he served in the u.s. Army. On his return Jack
Gordon served on the Miami Beach Housing Authority 1947-1958 and
with the Dade County Board of Public Instruction (now the Dade
County School Board) from 1961 to 1968.
senator Gordon was elected to the Florida State Senate in 1972,
a Democrat, he represented Miami Beach, the 35th. District. In
the Senate he served as president Pro Tempore 1982-84; Majority
Leader from 1988-1990 and Vice-chairman of the Rules & Calendar
Committee. Senator Gordon retired in 1992 having represented
Miami Beach for twenty years. The Miami Herald (June 2, 1992)
marked his retirement with the comment "Every legislative body
needs at least one Jack Gordon ••• There's now a perceptible void
in the Florida Senate ••• His commanding voice won't be heard in
floor debate. His probing questions won't be heard in
committee ••• The legacy of Senator Gordon's 20 years in the Senate
(and his eight years before that on the Dade School Board) can't
be measured adequately in terms of battles won or lost. Some of
his shining moments occurred when he stood tall in defeat, speak-
ing out for desegregation and for civil liberties at a time when
the forces of bigotry and repression still dominated Florida."
Jack Gordon has served as director of the Institute for Public
Policy & Citizenship studies at Florida International University.
Senator Gordon presently serves as president of the Hospice
Foundation.
The papers of Senator Gordon in the University Archives are
divided into two sections: Section I is an alphabetical list of
those files pertaining primarily with Jack Gordon's work with the
Dade county School Board. Section II is a chronological list of
the senate Bills with which the Senator was concerned. In this
section the Bills are listed according to the assigned Senate
Bill Number preceding the title of the bill.
