These innovative solutions should support new forms forsharingandpublishingallscholarlyoutputs, suchasdata andsoftware, while also facilitating scientists along the research process, with methods and tools from data collection, data analysis, up to dissemination. Thus, it is required to move away from static ways of sharing information (e.g., PDFs) and enhancing the ways of discovering and accessing all scholarly outputs, ensuring science reproducibility and reuse of outputs. There are multiple ways in which scholarly dissemination can be improved. Creating structured and semantically rich metadata about the multiple research outputs and how they are related would support better integration and exploitation of such research data. Providing methods for systematic computational analysesofscholarlyoutputswouldenableustoextractrelevantknowledgeandreason on this large mass of information. Finally, designing systems for navigating and making sense of scholarly data would allow a variety of stakeholders to understand researchdynamics, predicttrends, andevaluatethequalityofresearch.Theaimsofthe Semantics, Analytics, Visualization: Enhancing Scholarly Dissemination (SAVE-SD) Workshop series is to highlight solutions in these areas and bring together all the interested parties from academia and industry. These proceedings report on the two latest events of the SAVE-SD Workshop series: the 2017 and 2018 editions. Following the venues selected by The Web Con- ference,theSAVE-SD2017workshoptookplaceinPerth,Australia,onApril3,2017, while the SAVE-SD 2018 workshop was held in Lyon, France on April 24, 2018. In 2018, Natasha Noy from Google presented her talk entitled “Facilitating Discovery of Scientific Data” in which she discussed Google’s work on facilitating metadata dis- covery on the Web and their plans to contribute to the creation of a vibrant and open ecosystem of data publishing. The SAVE-SD 2017 and SAVE-SD 2018 programs presented in this volume include 12 papers: six full papers, two position papers, and four short papers. The workshops received a total of 16 submissions from 13 countries. Forthe2018edition,weadoptedamoreopensubmissionprocessforthefirsttime. The new policy for submissions and the review process was described in the multiple call for papers and on our website (https://save-sd.github.io/2018/submission.html). Thisnewprocessmeantthatthesubmittedpapersweremadeavailablepubliclyonthe workshop website upon submission (see https://save-sd.github.io/2018/papers.html). VI Preface Submissions were not anonymous and thus the authors were known to reviewers. We encouraged reviewers to sign their reviews, although they could decide to remain anonymous. The reviews themselves were also made publicly available on the work- shop’s website following a CC-BY license upon final notification to authors, together withthefinaldecision.Onexplicitrequestbytheauthors, therejectedpapersandtheir reviewscouldbeexcludedfromthewebsite.Ifthereviewerssignedtheirassessments, their names are also available on the website. Among the 55 assessments (including reviews and meta-reviews), seven reviews were signed by six Program Committee (PC) members. In any case, all the reviewers are acknowledged in the PCs, as listed herein. All SAVE-SD workshops have three PCs: – An Industrial PC, who mainly evaluate the submissions from an industrial per- spective–byassessinghowmuchthetheories/applicationsdescribedinthepapers do/may influence (positively or negatively) the publishing and technological domain and whether they could be concretely adopted by publishers and scholarly data providers – AnAcademicPC,whoevaluatethepapersmainlyfromanacademicperspective– by assessing the quality of the research described in such papers – A Senior PC, whose members act as meta-reviewers and have the crucial role of balancing the scores provided by the reviews from the other two PCs These three PCs are important for our goal of addressing the gap between the theoretical and practical aspects of scholarly dissemination, as the interaction between both aspects happens from the review process onward. We are very grateful to all the members of the three PCs, who are listed here, for theirhigh-qualityreviewsandconstructivefeedback,whichimprovedsignificantlythe quality of the papers contained in these proceedings. All submissions in both editions were reviewed by at least by one Industrial PC member, twoAcademicPCmembersandoneSeniorPCmember.Thefinaldecisionof acceptance/rejection was made by consensus by the chairs, considering conflict of interest when in existence. SAVE-SD accepts submissions not just in the traditional formats such as PDF, ODT, DOCX, but also in HTML, encouraging authors to provide semantically rich papers themselves. In order to facilitate the task of submitting articles in HTML, our workshopencouragestheuseofthesystemsRASH(https://rash-framework.github.io/) or dokieli (https://dokie.li/) for submissions. RASH stands for Research Articles in SimplifiedHTML, amarkuplanguagedefinedasasubsetofHTML+RDFthatcanbe producedfromOpenOfficedocuments,MicrosoftWorddocuments, andotherformats. Dokieli is a client-side editor for decentralized article publishing in HTML+RDF annotations and social interactions. We are happy to report that the two editions of SAVE-SD presented in this volume received nine out of 16 submissions in RASH (56%). Inbotheditionsweawardedthebestpaperawardtothepapersthatreceivedthebest scores from the reviewers. In 2017, the award was given to “About a BUOI: Joint Custody of Universally Unique Identifiers on the Web, or, Making PIDs More FAIR” byJoakimPhilipson.Thepaperdiscussestheuseofthepermanentidentifiers(PIDs)on the Internet and their compliance with the FAIR data principles, and suggests that Preface VII findability may be more important than the resolvability of links by one single authority. In 2018, the award was granted to “Geographical Trends in Research: A Preliminary Analysis on Authors’ Affiliations” by Andrea Mannocci et al. The paper presents a study of a conference proceedings dataset extracted from Springer Nature Scigraph that illustrates insightful geographical trends and highlights the unbalanced growth of competitive research institutions worldwide. Last, but certainly not least, we want to thank our sponsors: – Springer Nature, who provided a 150-euro voucher to buy Springer Nature’s products for the best paper award – L3S, who provided additional fundings August 2018 Alejandra González-Beltrán Francesco Osborne Silvio Peroni Sahar Vahdati Organization Workshop Chairs Alejandra González-Beltrán University of Oxford, UK Francesco Osborne The Open University, UK Silvio Peroni University of Bologna, Italy Sahar Vahdati University of Bonn, Germany Senior Program Committee Timothy W.
