The SAMT agenda brings together researchers at extreme ends of the se- mantic multimedia spectrum. Atone end, the Semantic Web and its supporting technologies are becoming established in both the open data environment and within specialist domains, such as corporate intranet search,e-Science (particu- larly life sciences),and culturalheritage. To facilitate the world-wide sharing of media, W3C is developing standard ways of denoting fragments of audio/visual content and of specifying and associating semantics with these. At the other end of the spectrum, media analysis tools continue to grow in sophistication, identifying features thatcanthen be associatedwith explicit semantics,be they expressed formally or informally, using proprietary formats or open standards. Recentprogressatthese two fronts ofthe SAMT spectrum means that research spanningthesemanticgapisnowofvitalimportancetofeedtherealapplications that are emerging. This conference also represents a step towards bridging the gap between the researchcultures and their respective approachesat both ends of the spectrum. The papers selected show that SAMT is able to attract researchers from media analysis, who see the benefits that more explicit semantics can provide, as well as researchersfrom knowledge engineering who realize that, while a picture can beexpressedasathousandconcepts, amillionmorearewaitingtobeextracted. In order to attract high-quality papers at future conferences it is important thatSAMT be recognizedasthe leadingconferenceonsemanticmultimedia. To achieve this goal, this year’s conference brought together the very best of the work in the area. Of the 52 full papers submitted to the conference, 12 were selected for inclusion in these proceedings. Apart from the accepted full papers, the SAMT program was enriched by 34 poster presentations, selected from 46 submissions, a special demo session with 4 project demos, 2 keynote talks by Jane Hunter and Mor Namaan, as well as 2 invited talks given by EC representatives, Albert Gauthier and Luis Rodr´ıguez-Rosell´o.Moreover,three interesting workshops were offered, namely: – International Workshop on Interacting with Multimedia Content in the So- cial Semantic Web – Cross-Media Information Analysis, Extraction and Management – Semantic 3D Media In addition, there were three tutorials, namely: – A Semantic Multimedia Web – Ontologies and the Semantics of Visualization – Creating Semantically Rich Virtual Reality Applications VI Preface We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed to the technical and organizational success of the SAMT 2008 conference. Special thanks go to the Poster and Demo Chairs, Michela Spagnuolo and Siegfried Handschuh, the Workshop and Tutorial Chairs, Fabio Ciravegna and David Duce, thePublicityChair,MarcinGrzegorzek, andtheRegistrationChair,Ruth Go¨tten, who alldid a greatjob inthe preparationphase for this event.Further- more,wewouldliketothanktheProgramCommitteemembersforasmoothre- viewprocess,theinvitedspeakersandtutors,theIndustryDayCo-chair,Werner Haas, aswellasallcontributorsandparticipantsoftheconference. Moreover,we aregratefulforthe generouscontributionof oursponsors, namely, the consortia of the K-Space and WeKnowIt projects, the University of Koblenz-Landau, as well as the Ministry of Education, Science, Youth, and Culture of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. This year’s conference provided a high-quality archival publication and a variedandinterestingprogram,designedtostimulateinteractionamongpartici- pants.Forfutureconferencesthechallengewillbetoencouragemoreresearchers to contribute to the field, for example, researchers from 2&3D graphics, sensor technology, and further application domains.
