PREFACE

The great visionary and champion of the downtrodden, architect of our Constitution,
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar embraced Buddhism on the hallowed and sacrosanct
Deekshabhoomi in 1956 and thereafter thought of imparting education to the
downtrodden from urban areas. The clarion call was: Educate, Agitate & Organize.
This led to the formation of a trust Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Smarak Samiti in 1958,
which then established this college in the year 1964. The late Padmashri Dadasaheb
Gaikwad was the Founder President of this Samiti, Ex-Governor of Kerala and Bihar
was the President of Smarak Samiti from 1972 to 2015. At present Hon’ble Bhadant
Arya Nagarjun Shurei Sasai is the President Shri.Sadanadandji Fulzele has been the
Secretary since 1963 to-date. The new building of Dr. Ambedkar College of Arts and
Commerce (as it was known then) was formally inaugurated by then Chief Minister,
Mr. Vasantrao Naik, in June 1964. Three years before that, Mr. Y.B. Chavan, then
Chief Minister of Maharashtra transferred 13 acres of Government land to the Smarak
Samiti and also laid the foundation of the College to erect a fitting memorial in the
name of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar.
From very humble beginnings, Dr. Ambedkar College too has marched ahead with
steady strides. Many were the travails, trials and tribulations which the founding
father had to face, the biggest hurdle of all being finance. With the generous and
timely assistance from Shri. Manoharbhai Patel procured by Adv. Shri. N. H.
Kumbhare, Vice-Chairman of the Managing Committee, the deposit money of Rs.
20,000/- was duly paid to the University and permission was granted to this College.
The arduous journey thereon was an uphill task and the illustrious founder members
of the Samiti have always acted over these years as guiding beacon lights.
The dedication and valuable contribution of such extraordinary personages such as
Shri. R. R. Patil, Shri. W. K. Ganar, Adv. Shri. M. M. Yeole, Adv. Shri. N. H.
Kumbhare, Shri. R. J. Kamble, Shri. Bhayasaheb Ambedkar, Dr. S. V. Ramteke, Shri.
S. M. Ramteke, Shri. G. D. Patil, Shri. D. R. Patil, Shri. J. M. Mool, D. M. Gajbhiye
and Shri. S. D. Patil shall always occupy a place in the history of this institution.
At present this honourable task continues to be shouldered by the following members:
Adv. Shri. M. M. Yeole, Shri. V. T. Chikate, Shri. P. K. Bhagwat, Adv. A. S. Fulzele,
Shri. N. R. Sute, Dr. R. R. Gavai, Shri. D. G. Dabhade, Dr. S.S.Fulzele and Shri.V.M.
Gajghate. Late Shri. J. M. Mool, Late Shri. Eknathji Haware and Late Shri. Dinanathji
Sharma were also members of this team until their recent demise.
From its infancy, the college has been led forward with albeit faltering steps by
capable, sincere and zealous Principals. Under the leadership of our first Principal,
Mr. Y. M. Pathak, this College in its nascent stages took charge of his duties and
responsibilities on 2nd July, 1964. Thus the College began with just five classrooms,
five lecturers, and 300 students, imparting education in the faculties of Arts and
Commerce.

Today, the College proudly claims to house more than 50 classrooms, has on roll
around 6000 students, and offers various courses in multiple disciplines with over 70
permanent members of the teaching staff as well as 53 members comprising the non-
teaching staff. Education in the Science Stream commenced in 1969 and Law stream
was introduced in 1984. At present, there are around 400 students enrolled in Law
courses and this discipline has its independent building on the campus. Undergraduate
Courses in Biotechnology and BCA Science began in 2006 and 2008 respectively.
DACN offers a number of post-graduate Courses. M. Com in both mediums was
started in 1980. Since 1994 we began with M.A. in English, Economics and Marathi
and M.Sc. in Chemistry, Computer Science, Biochemistry and Biotechnology. In
2008 we took off with Diploma and Advanced Diploma course in Bioinformatics and
a one-year PG Diploma in Biochemical Genomics (Pharmacogenomics). Under the
UGC Innovative Programme since 2013, a one-year Diploma Course in Nanoscience
and Nanotechnology has commenced very successfully. The latest courses to be added
to this plenitude are: Master’s Degree Programme in Law in Constitutional Law,
Business Law, Criminal Law, M.Sc. in Physics as well as Diploma in Health Care
Assistance (Geriatric Care).
These fifty three years have seen the successful tenure of eleven past Principals Mr.
Y. M. Pathak, Mr. M. R. Srinivasan, Dr. A. K. Sinha, Prof. T. K. Damodaram, Prof.
M. K.Dongre, Dr. R. Krishnakumar, Dr. Mrs. A. A. Sinha, Dr. I. H. Jeevaji, Prof. T.
C. Warkar, Dr. D. M. Jaiswal, Prof. S. M. Shende, Dr. Mrs. K. M. Reddy and at
present Dr. P. C. Pawar.
It is no wonder, that this College was deservedly accredited by NAAC with the
highest Grade in the year 2004, being the only college in Vidarbha to have received
this singular recognition. The College indeed emerged as a most trusted centre for
quality education in Central India!
The NAAC re-accreditation at the highest ‘A’ grade in 2011 bears testimony to our
unrelenting commitment to quality and quest for progress. The College has also been
accorded the status of ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ by the UGC in the year
2010. One more feather in our cap is that recently DACN has had the rare privilege of
being designated as a “Community College” by the State Government and is one of
the five colleges in Maharashtra to get this honour. Under this scheme the college has
now initiated a diploma course in Health Care Assistance (Geriatric Care).
The Principal, Dr. Mrs. Reddy has been honoured by the Nagpur University with the
Ideal Principal Award!
DACN is blessed with a work force of dedicated, committed and efficient teachers,
who sharpen the acumen of their students, ignite their intellectual curiosity and equip
them to take charge of their future. Members of the teaching faculty are also
extensively involved in research activities most of them are Doctorates, have
published papers in reputed journals and have even authored many books. The
College boasts of having successfully organized over 15 National Conferences, 4
International Conferences and a number of Workshops and Seminars over the past 5
years.

The College provides various forums, platforms and facilities for the all-round
development and growth of the students such as NCC, NSS, Unnati a program for
Skill Growth and Personality Development, Entrepreneurship Development Cell to
motivate students towards self-employment, Career Development Cell, Women’s
Development Cell, Psycho-Socio Counseling Cell, Social Outreach Cell, a Sports
Academy and a well equipped gymnasium. The Library of the College is richly
stocked with a number of reference books, textbooks, journals, magazines and
encyclopedias and also houses the priceless original copy of the Constitution!
With its uncompromising standards of excellence, the College is not only committed
to imbibe the highest professional skills to prepare the students for a competitive 21st
century, but also to make them sensitive to the demands of social justice, pluralism
and equality.

*PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE*
It is with great pleasure and honour that I present this Self Study Report that carefully
threads together an exhaustive narration of the multi-dimensional growth and
progression of a glorious institution of higher learning. Dr. Ambedkar College stands
in a place which has seen and witnessed one of the most phenomenal events known to
Indian history. This is the soil on which that great revolutionary scholar namely, Dr.
B. R. Ambedkar had embraced Buddhism. The College, that has a history spanning
over more than 50 years, is run under the aegis of Param Pujya Dr Babasaheb
Ambedkar Smarak Samiti. Since its inception till date, this college has rested on the
enduring principles of social equality and social justice that were so eloquently
advocated by Dr Ambedkar. The inclusive model of education that we stand for,
predominantly reflects in several pages of this report.
The first accreditation of this institution by NAAC at the highest grade followed by its
subsequent re-accreditation again at A Grade bears testimony to our unshifting
commitment to quality and quest for excellence. The College has also been accorded
the status of “College with Potential for Excellence.” Achieving these milestones was
by no means an easy task. It was the concerted efforts of all the stakeholders that
steered us to the road of progress. But since progression is not a one-time task that is
achieved only once, but must consistently happen over a continuum of time, we now
eagerly look forward to yet another re-accreditation exercise by the NAAC for the
third time. In the past five years we have meticulously speculated on our pitfalls and
shortcomings, while not losing on our strengths and our vision to achieve new targets.
Concerted efforts have been made to overcome our weaknesses and remedy our
defects. We thus eagerly look forward to the third visit of the NAAC peer team to our
campus as we realize that every such exercise is a journey towards perfection.
This SSR is a reflection of our compliance to the prescribed parameters/criteria. It also
documents how we have often travelled even beyond these specifications in our
journey of imparting quality and affordable education. It evidences our
implementation of the recommendations made by the earlier NAAC peer teams. The
third visit of the NAAC team, we’re confident, will open the doors to further
progression by pointing out where we lack, while also applauding our achievements.
We therefore eagerly look forward to welcome the NAAC peer team on the campus of
this illustrious institution!
