Accident and Emergency Medicine is a young, but flourishing specialty. It follows, therefore, that there is a relative paucity of quality texts to guide the trainee, as well as the Consultant. Training in Emergency Medicine is now well established at both Registrar and Senior Registrar level, and Post-Caiman trainees will enjoy a well- structured five year programme. The second tier examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS Ed. [A&E]) is now established as an enviable qualification but soon the exit fellowship of the Faculty of Accident and Emergency Medicine will be required at the end of training. This text will be of great value to those preparing for both the FRCS (Ed. [A&E]) and the FFAEM, as well as those wishing to keep on top of current thinking. Not only is the reader stretched by the testing MCQ’s, case histories, data interpretation, and clinical questions, but learns further by reviewing the well explained answers. This is an educationally sound learning method which uses scant available study time to the best advantage. The authors are to be congratulated. The readers will be grateful, and as a result patient care ‘in the front line’ of clinical practice will improve. David V. Skinner FFAEM, FRCS Accident and Emergency Consultant Preface Accident and emergency (A&E) medicine by its very nature covers a very extensive field of study. The new senior house officer, perhaps only qualified for a year, can find the range of conditions presenting to the department quite daunting. With experience comes recognition of the common patterns of illness and injury and appreciation of situations where a more cautious clinical approach may be necessary. In this book we have aimed to outline the diagnosis and management of the common clinical situations in emergency medicine. We have used the format of multiple choice questions, case histories, data interpretations and picture questions as used in many of the postgraduate exams. Also included are the conditions that frequently result in medicolegal action, conditions where management remains contentious and the occasional rarity which may be seen from time to time in a busy department. We hope the book will be used both by trainees wishing to pursue a career in emergency medicine who are studying for exams such as the FRCS(Ed) in A&E and the FFAEM, and also by recently qualified SHOs starting their first post in the specialty. We would be interested to hear of any suggestions or changes that could be made for future editions. Derek Burke, Ian Greaves, Philip Hormbrey Oxford, May 1995
