The big data paradigm is applied to complex data and to the dataset whose size is beyond the competency of traditional computing services. Due to the innovation of big data, this technology is exposed to vulnerabilities, new risks, and threats due to a substantial volume of data and also different types of data. Cloud comput- ing provides IT services in a pay-per-use fashion with great other benefts. Although there are many benefts of cloud computing and big data, there are many signifcant roadblocks to adoption. In today’s era of cloud com- puting and big data, the most signifcant barriers to adoption are security and privacy, followed by other issues such as vendor lock-in, portability, and scalability. An organization needs to know before getting involved in cloud comput- ing and big data, what are the key security requirements, aspects to ensure high security to applications, and data processing. Big data and cloud com- puting are integrated in practice. Cloud computing offers massive storage, high computation power, and distributed capability for the support of pro- cessing big data. Therefore, organizations are demanding to investigate the security and privacy of both cloud computing and big data. This book is written for a computer scientist, a practitioner who is work- ing on cloud computing and big data, a research community working on cloud computing and big data, security and privacy and risk mitigation techniques. This book was developed to introduce cloud developers, data mining engineers, and system programmers to new approaches to deal with threats, risks, and vulnerabilities inherent in cloud computing and big data. The book is handy for working professionals, managers, researchers, aca- demicians, research scholars, and industry experts to deal with cloud and big data security challenges. The rationale of the study is to provide useful information gleaned from research to stakeholders of cloud computing and big data and their security. These are very broad topics and it is diffcult to cover each aspect of these topics. We described the virtualization of cloud computing, cloud service and development models, protocols used in the cloud and big data, face recognition, bandwidth issues, security and privacy vii viii Preface challenges, cloud storage issues, mobile cloud computing, the impact of cloud computing, and big data on healthcare, data mining security issues, roles of big data in the Internet of Things, as well as the cloud security framework. The key features of the book are current security and privacy challenges and their countermeasures, which will help readers select the best secu- rity mitigation techniques and apply them. The editors and contributing authors tried and their level best to cover many of the topics related to the security and privacy of cloud computing and big data, plus much additional information. However, this book attempts to provide readers with at least the basic information needed on all relevant topics, as well as references to additional sources of information. In recent years, many books on cloud computing and big data security and privacy have been published, each focusing on a specifc topic. The editors are confdent that this book will provide vital information to readers. Editors Dr. Muhammad Imran Tariq is working at Higher Education Department, Lahore, Pakistan, where he has been since 2006. He earned a Bachelor of Computer Science from Allama Iqbal University, Islamabad in 2003, M.Sc Computer Science from Preston Institute of Management Science and Technology in 2008, Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Lahore in 2013, and fnally Ph.D. in Computer Science from Superior College, Lahore in 2019. Moreover, he has MCSE, MCP+I, A+, and CCNA certifcations. His research interests include Cloud Computing, Information Security standards, Service Level Agreement, Information Security Metrics, Cloud Risks and mitigation techniques, Wireless Network Security, Image Processing, Deep Learning, Artifcial Intelligence, Sensor Networks, Multicriteria Decision Making, Fuzzy Logic, and Risk Management.
