We are committed to prepare and publish in our triennial (1995-7) university-industry research project to satisfy the demand from a wider read ership interested in these achievements and the prospects arising from them for use in studies in trade, investment, business and other commerce. The readership we are aiming at includes the business community (corporations and individual investors), government trade agencies, chambers of commerce and industry, and other institu tions, academics, economic advisers, business economists, management and strategic consultants. It is also intended for students of international trade, business and economic development who, during the course of their investigation and planning, require a well researched, soundly analytical and quantitative assessment of the available emerging market, market size, structure and pattern of consump tion, production and finance, significant trends, competi tiveness and business opportunities. The research for the book was carried out during 1996 as part of our work for the project Foreign Investment in Vietnam, which has been funded partly by the Australian Research Council of the Department of Employment, Education and Training and partly by the Vietnam Institute for Trade (formerly the Research Institute for Foreign Economic Relations, the Ministry of Trade) for the triennium 1995-7. The researchers and contributors to the book are experts in their own right in their own country who, fortunately for us, have agreed to collaborate to provide us with an authorirative survey and reliable forecasts of the issues, problems, solutions, and opportuni- IX x Acknowledgements tites for trade, investment, and business in Vietnam for use or reference by all interested persons, be they local or foreign. For its main objective, the book is focused specifically on sectoral or industry-by-industry analysis, and to meet this targeted scope, it covers in detail the con ditions (as well as possible obstacles) of supply, demand, finance, law and trade for all twenty sectors of the economy of Vietnam, from agriculture and rural develop ment to private, foreign direct investment and official (governmental) development assistance. During the preparation of the book, I have benefited from the help and assistance of colleagues in the Department of Economics and the Research Institute for International Business at the University of Wollongong, and from discussions with senior members of the NSW Vietnam Chambers of Commerce. I have had great help, understanding and encouragement in many forms from my wife Souraya and daughters Danielle and Cybele during the writing and editing of this book. TRANVANHoA
