Acknowledgments This volume is the result of the collaboration of all those who have contrib uted to it. Each of the authors has, for many years and in a variety of contexts, been pre-occupied with the relationship between language learning and the study abroad experience. It is the focus of their individual research projects and the related insights resulting from these studies that have interacted to produce an emerging linguistic profile of students who have studied abroad. Credit for the original inspiration for this book belongs to Thorn Huebner who proposed such a volume at AAAL in 1991 and invited me to undertake it. Both he and Kees de Bot, editors of the Series on Bilingualism, deserve thanks for their helpful editorial supervision. Special recognition is due Nancy Monda who with unique talent and enviable calm managed the task of countless editorial details, always with meticulous attention and indefatigable energy. Her devotion will always be remembered. Appreciation is expressed as well to Jeffrey Altschuler and his assistants, Laura Valentine and Chris Stone, who provided extensive techni cal assistance with the Index. Yola de Lusenet and Kees Vaes of John Benjamins are also singled out for their responsiveness, sound advice, flex ibility and unfailing good humor. Appreciation is expressed as well to the Office of the President of Carnegie Mellon University for financial support for my own research in this volume. Never to be forgotten is the constant behind the scenes support extended by my family. A personal note of appreciation is extended to my sister, Alice Freed and most especially to my husband, Sheldon Tabb, for continual encouragement, confidence and unfailing indulgence. Barbara F.
