Organizers UNIVERSITY OF CRETE A.G. LEVENTIS FOUNDATION 10 PREFACE In May 1997 an international symposium was organized in Heraklion, Crete, on the 'Eastern Mediterranean: Cyprus-Dodecanese-Crete, 16th-6th century BC'. The proceedings, as well as the cata logue of an exhibition with the same title which took place at the Archaeological Museum of Herak lion, were published in Greek and English one year later, in 1998. At chat time the organizers did not fully realize how much further this initiative would develop, and how broad are the horizons which are opening up. The success of both the symposium and the exhibition was completed with the display of the same exhibition in the Musei Capitolini in Rome, in 2001, with the publication of a short catalogue in Italian. In 1999 the Spanish cultural foundation 'La Caixa' suggested to Vassos Karageorghis the organi zation of an exhibition and an associated symposium in Barcelona on a theme related to the role of Cyprus in the development of Mediterranean civilization. He proposed a broader topic, covering 1nterconnections in the Medite"anean, from 1600 to 600 BC'. The preparation of this project was already at an advanced stage and a number of colleagues from various parts of the world had already committed themselves to participate, when the organizers decided that they were unable to see it materialize, for reasons which do not concern the readers of the present volume. However, develop ing out of the preliminary work which had already been completed, planning started in the year 2000 on a second international conference on behalf of the University of Crete and the A.G. Leven tis Foundation, with the full cooperation and support of the Greek Ministry of the Aegean and Min istry of Culture. This conference, like the earlier one, was held at Rethymno in Crete from 29th September to 2nd October 2002, with the participation of scholars specializing in this crucial period of one thousand years in the Mediterranean, from the beginning of the Late Bronze Age to the Archaic period. Following the previous tradition, an exhibition will follow on the theme 'Illoe<;: from Sidon to Huelva. Interconnections in the Medite"anean, 16th-6th century BC: This will be held in the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens, from May to October 2003, under the aegiso f the Cul tural Olympiad. It will bring before the public not only the results of the scholarly symposium but also the evidence of material culture which constitutes the tangible part of our history. We would like to thank most warmly those who helped us to organize the symposium: the Greek Ministry of Culture and Ministry of the Aegean, the University of Crete and the A.G. Leventis Foundation; also the GRECOTEL company of the Nicos Daskalantonakis family for their warm hospitality. We owe particular thanks to Dr. Ian A. Todd who edited the texts of the communications and the discussions at the end of each communication and Yorgos T assoulas who helped this edition and transcribed the text of the discussion from the tape-recordings.
