Since 1960theislandhasbeensubjectedtofairlyevenly-spacedburstsofentomologicalinvestigation.Teamsof specialists,eachconcentratingontheirownchosenorderofinsectsor,inafewcases,severalordersinaparticular habitat,werebroughttogetherforuptotwoweeksatatimeinanattempttoproduceareasonablycomprehensive catalogueoftheinsectfauna.Onlythenwoulditbepossibletoaccuratelymeasurechangesininvertebrateactivity resultingfrompastoralmanipulationandwoodlandrestoration.Thesehavebeenthetwomainmanagementactivities aimedatrestoringbiodiversity. Between1960and1963theislandwasvisitedby10entomologistsatdifferentseasons.Duringthefoursuccessive yearscoveredbytheseinitialsurveys,inspiteofthefactthatitrainedforalmosthalfofthetime,thefieldsurveys produced a basic list of 1722 species of insects (Steel and Woodroffe, 1969). The team reconvened in August/September1969buttheuntimelydeathofBillSteelonthelastnightofsurveyandthatofhisco-editor, GerryWoodroffe,afewyearslater,meantthatthecollationofdatafromthisgatheringwasaprotractedprocess. Recordsfromthesesurveys,combinedwiththoseofvisitingandresidententomologists,were,however,eventually broughttogetherandpublishedin1982(Wormell, 1982).Bythen,thenumberofconfirmedspecieshadrisento 2137. Duringeachoftheteamsurveysnewspecieswereturningupand,astimewentby,afairassessmentoftheisland's insectfaunawastakingshape. In1990theScottishEntomologistswereinvitedtocarryoutaweek-longsurveybetween25and29June.There were22participantsand,thistime,theirremitwasnotconfinedtoinsects.Spiderswerealsoinvestigated.The resultsagaincontributedsubstantiallytoourknowledgeoftheinvertebratefauna(Hancock, 1992andWhitely, 1994). Duringthenext10yearsreportsfromvisitingentomologistswereagainbroughttogetherandincorporatedinthe masterlistalongwithobservationsofresidentsandvisitingnaturalistsincludedinthewildlifereportsinstigatedby thelateWilfNelsonandperiodicallyproducedbyScottishNaturalHeritage. InlateAugust/earlySeptember2000theScottishEntomologists'gatheringwasagainheldonRum.Again,theremit wasnotconfinedtoinsectsand,thistime,inadditiontospiders,harvestmenandpseudoscorpions,theisland's molluscs, Crustacea (Isopoda), Diplopoda (Millipedes) and Chilopoda (Centipedes) were also investigated, apparentlyforthefirsttime! Theweek-longsearchwasprobablyoneofthemostsuccessfulofallthegroupsurveystodateprovidingnotonly76 newspecies ofinsectsbutagreatdeal ofdetailed information on distribution aswell as useful dataon the 125 colonisationbyarborealspeciesofthenewnativewoodlandsrestoredsince1959.Theinclusionofmapreferences forallrecordswasparticularlyusefulandthereweremanyrecordsfromwidelydispersedlocalities. Masterlistsofinsectordersupdatedto1999(Wormell,inprep.)werehandedouttoparticipantsatthebeginningof thesurvey.Thesenowprovidedareasonablycomprehensiveappraisaloftheinsectfaunaoftheislandandalsogave anindicationwhichgroupsrequiredfurtherinvestigation. Sadly,DavidPhilips,oneofthemostenthusiasticofthegroup,diedinNovember2003.Hischosenspecialistgroup wasTipulidae(Diptera),buthealsoincludedvaluablerecordsofHemiptera,OrthopteraandHymenoptera,finding5 previouslyunrecordedspeciesaswellasgatheringsubstantialnewinformationondistributionwithintheislandof previouslyrecordedspecies.Hewillbegreatlymissedatfuturegatherings. DavidBeaumontvisitedtheislandinMayandJuly2000tosetoutpitfalltrapsatthefollowinglocalities: KilmoryTankTreePlot (NG363008) HarrisTreePlot (NM338961) GuiridilTreePlot (NG319008) Kinloch(behindTheWhiteHouse) (NM402992) NorthfaceofHallivalat500m (NM392967) Histrappingsproducedanenormousamountofnewinformation includingasubstantialnumberofpreviously unrecordedColeopteraaswellasspiders. Thispaperdealsonlywiththeinsectsrecordedduringtheweek-longsurveyincludingmaterialfromthepitfall trappingsplusafewrecordedfromsamplesofleaflittercollectedbyKathySayerandMalcolmWhitmorein December2000andextractedbyGordonCorbet.DrCorbethasagreedtobringtogetherthesubstantiallistsofother invertebrategroups,namelyMollusca,Crustacea(Isopoda),Arachnida(spiders,pseudoscorpionsandharvestmen), Diplopoda(Millipedes),Chilopoda(centipedes)incollaborationwithDavidBeaumontandMikeDavidson. Perhapsthe two most interesting species encountered duringthis survey were Gyrophaenapoweri. Crotch, a previouslyunrecordedsaphylinidbeetleassociatedwithwoodlandfungi(Welch,2001 &2003)andCosmopterix orichalcea(Stainton),Cosmopterigidae,asmallleafminingmothwhoselarvaewerefoundbyKeithBland,in Anthoxanthum,fromtwonewlocalitiesatKinlochandKilmory.Theonlypreviousrecordofthelatterwasasingle imagocollectedbyPeterWormellintheHarristreeplotinJune 1967anddeterminedbyTedPelham-Clinton (Pelham-Clinton,1986).Bothoftheserareinsectswere,untilthe1970s,thoughttobeconfinedtoafewscattered localitiesinsouthernEnglandand,inthecaseofthelatter,alsoinsouthWalesandIreland.Theirdiscovery,as residentpopulationsontheIsleofRum,isquiteremarkable. INSECTSRECORDED Previouslyunrecordedspeciesareindicatedwithanasterisk. SMALLORDERSANDHEMIPTERA Noneoftheparticipantsonthissurveyconcentratedontheseorders,however,casualrecordsbyGordonCorbet, Keith Bland, Roger and Rosy Key, Colin Welch, David Phillips and Peter Wormell resulted in useful new information on the distribution ofsome Odonata, Plecoptera, Orthoptera, Hemiptera and Neuroptera with 6 previouslyunrecordedspecies(1Psocoptera,4Hemipteraand2Neuroptera). ContributorstothissectionwereCarolineAllen(CA),DavidBarbour(DAB),KeithBland(KB),GordonCorbert (GC),MichaelDavidson(MD),DavidHorsfield(DH),RogerandRosyKey(RK),JessieMacKay(JM),Colin Welch(RCW)andPeterWormell(PW).Nineteennewspecieswereaddedtotheisland'schecklist. Keith Bland concentrated on families which had received the least attention in the past, i.e. Nepticulidae, Bucculatriidae, Lyonetiidae, Gracillariidae, Glyphipterigidae, Yponomeutidae, Coleophoridae, Oecophoridae, Gelechiidae,MomphidaeandCosmopterigidae.Withinthesefamiliesherecorded16previouslyunrecordedspecies. HismostinterestingdiscoverywasoflarvalminesofCosmoptehxorichalceainAnthoxanthumatKilmoryand Kinloch(Bland2001).Twenty-twoimaginesemergedbetween10and15May2001.Theonlypreviousrecordof thisspecieswasasingleimagonettedbyPeterWormellinadensematofFestucarubraintheHarrisTreePloton 26June 1967anddeterminedbyTedPelhamClinton(Pelham-Clinton, 1986).Thesewouldseemtobetheonly recordssofarforthisleafminerinScotland. PeterWormell,CarolineAllen,JessieMacKayandDavidBarbourcarriedoutmothtrappingsinthevegetation monitoringenclosureonKilmorymachair,KilmoryandHarrisTreePlots,HarrisMausoleumenclosuresonthe northsideofLochScresort,atvarioussitesintheKinlochPoliciesandintheKinlochGlen.OneTortricidAcleris comariana(theStrawberryTortrix),newtotheRum list,wastrappedintheKinlochGlenandanewPyralid EudoniamuranaatseverallocalitiesintheKinlocharea. CarolineAllencollectedandrearedlarvaeincludingPeridromasaucia(thePearlyUnderwing).Ithasbeenstated thatthereisevidencetosupportthesuggestionthatthisspeciescouldbeapermanentresidentinsomesheltered nooksinmilderareasinBritain(South, 1908)thoughHeath&Emmet(Vol.9, 1979)suggestthisisunlikely. However,sincebreedingwasalsoconfirmedinthe 1960s(Wormell 1982)itwouldseempossiblethatasmall residentpopulationmay,indeed,havebecomeestablished. DavidBarbourrecordedseveralmalesofOrgyiaantiqua(theVapourer),forthefirsttimeonRum,onthenorthside ofLochScresort.Takingintoconsiderationthesedentarynatureoftheflightlessfemaleofthisspeciesitraises questionsaboutitscolonisationhistory.
