Southern 2 Criminal 0 Justice 1 Association 7 The Changing/Evolving Nature of Criminal Justice in the South September 27-30, 2017 Southern Criminal Justice Association www.southerncj.org PRESIDENT August 4, 2017 Sean Maddan University of West Georgia Dear SCJA Members and Conference Participants, st Welcome to New Orleans and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Southern Criminal Justice Association! It has 1 VICE PRESIDENT been some time since we have been to the western side of the region. Be sure to take time to enjoy the sites Marv Krohn University of Florida and attractions after and between conference events. nd This year’s theme is “The Criminal Justice Milieu in the South.” While presentations and roundtables 2 VICE PRESIDENT should keep southern criminal justice in mind, presentations/roundtables tackle a host of criminological John Stogner concerns. The Program Chair, Marv Krohn, has created a strong program of presentations, roundtables, University of North Carolina and events. We hope you enjoy the program across the week. Remember that there is food and drink Charlotte available throughout the conference, but especially at receptions. In addition to our panels and TREASURER roundtables, there are several events I would like to highlight. On Wednesday, SCJA is providing a mini- Kent Kerley University of workshop on funding offender treatment programming, conducted by Mitch Miller; the workshop is a little Texas, Arlington shorter than normal workshops and will begin at 9:30. In addition, the Presidential Address and Poster Session (complete with the third annual student competition) will be held from 3:30-5:30 on Wednesday; BOARD OF DIRECTORS immediately after the poster showcase will be the Presidents Reception sponsored by the University of Laura Agnich Central Florida from 6:00 to 8:30. On Thursday night, the Springer Reception will be held from 6:00-8:30. Georgia Southern On both Thursday and Friday mornings, from 8:30-9:30, we will hold student breakfasts; Thursday University morning will focus on publishing and Friday morning will focus on going to a graduate/doctoral program. As in the last two years, current and former Editors of some of the best journals in our field and Gavin Lee representatives from doctoral programs across the region will moderate these breakfasts. Finally, the University of West Georgia Keynote Address will be given by Dr. Marcus Felson at the Awards Luncheon on Friday from 12:00-1:45. Catherine D. Marcum It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as your President over the last year. Overall, SCJA continues Appalachian State its upward trajectory. SCJA is without a doubt the best regional association and conference; this is University illustrated in our growth as an organization and the programming we are able to provide at the conference. Bryan Lee Miller Over this last year, the Board of Directors and I have engaged in several initiatives. First, we have worked Georgia Southern University to update the association logo brand (you can see it below on the left). To celebrate the new logo, we will be providing t-shirts featuring the logo to registrants of the conference. Second, in our efforts to Christina Policastro streamline SCJA policies, we have created a new policy for the old “webmaster” position. The new IT University of Tennessee at Coordinator position will now be standardized with a full list of duties and information on term limits. All Chattanooga lines are now systematically uniform across our policies. Third, in an effort to recruit new membership, we held a reception at ACJS in Kansas City in the spring. The reception was considered to be a great success. IMMEDIATE PAST The board will report to the membership of how successful we were in recruiting based on attendance at PRESIDENT this conference when we have our mid=year meeting at the at ACJS in the Spring of 2018. In addition, we J. Heith Copes have continued our support of students via conference breakfasts, poster competition, and awards for University of Alabama at exceptional students in the region. Finally, the American Journal of Criminal Justice, is again one of the top Birmingham journals in our field. Special thanks the AJCJ editor Wesley Jennings; his run as editor has taken the journal to new heights. In 2018, the journal will transition to the new editor, Mitch Miller. Mitch was selected as ACJS REPRESENTATIVE Leah Daigle the new editor of AJCJ from a very competitive process and field of applicants. Georgia State University In short, the state of the SCJA is exceptional. The Board of Directors is a large reason for this. Members of AJCJ EDITOR the Board are critical in the functioning of the SCJA. I would encourage everyone who has not done so to Wesley Jennings contribute to the SCJA by running for a position on the Board or helping with committee work. The SCJA University of South Florida needs you. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF As with any conference, a great deal of planning went into this conference. Thanks goes out to all the THE SECRETARIAT committees and their chairs, as well as the Board of Directors, for making sure this conference is a success. Kathrine Johnson Thanks also goes to Immediate Past President Heith Copes, who has helped in making sure the numbers University of West Florida are correct for rooms and receptions. Special thanks to Marv Krohn, this year’s Program Chair and current Vice President, for his time and effort in making the conference a success. Please make sure you provide any feedback about the conference to Marv so that we can make improvements to next year’s conference in Pensacola Beach, Florida, when we go back to the beach.
