The committee deemed it important to publish a book authored by a group of our Laureates who were willing to look toward the future of education in the United States. In addition to the efforts of the History Committee members and the authors of the chapters in this book, we would also like to thank Kappa Delta Pi for supporting the project as an important contribu- tion to educational thinking in the twenty-first century. —OLD, Jr —MLK Schooling for Tomorrow's America, page vii Copyright © 2014 by Information Age Publishing All rights of reproduction in any form reserved. vii FOrewOrD I like to read everything about education. Articles about education tend to make me think, question, wonder, ponder, and occasionally laugh out loud. Whether the article reaffirms my own beliefs, or causes me cognitive dissonance, if it is about education, I want to read it. I ask myself, and then my students, questions about what is read. “Who is this author?” “Is this research or opinion, and how do we know?” “How did this person become an authority in the field, and, with fame, does his/her writing change the work in schools?” “If we had this author in our room today, what would we ask him/her?” “What might we implement in our own classrooms from this reading?” “What research might we want to do, based on what we have read?” I hope you ask these questions as you read this book. This book can be read by educators at all stages in their careers. What a great selection for a book study group of practicing teachers or for a semi- nar with graduate students. The authors share their thoughts about educa- tion for the future, but also inform us about the past. Whether you encoun- ter this book as a textbook or for a professional learning community, the contents will inform and inspire you, encouraging you to think deeply and work towards the improvement of education. I first read the work of some of the authors of this book when I was a doctoral student. These authors were just names to me then, names to be dropped in that final oral exam if I wanted my degree. Then, something amazing happened. I joined an organization where the people whose work I had read actually appeared and spoke. I heard speeches from the au- thors about their backgrounds, experiences, and work.
