TheSchoolofMedicineisthefounding schooloftheUniversityofMaryland,andtodayitisanintegralpartofthe 13-campusUniversity SystemofMaryland. OntheUniversityofMarylandBaltimorecampus,theSchoolofMedicine servesasthefoundationforalargeacademichealthcenterthatcombinesmedicaleducation, biomedicalresearch,patientcareandcommunityservice. Whileitstraditionalexcellence remainsconstant,theSchoolofMedicineanditsnationalreputationcontinuetogrow. TheSchoolofMedicineboaststheoldestbuildingintheWesternhemispherein continuoususeformedicaleducation,themeticulouslyrestoredDavidgeHall,builtin 1812. Twomajorclassroomandlaboratorybuildings,thefourteen-floorBresslerResearchBuilding andthenine-floorMedicalSchoolTeachingFacility,werecompletedinthemid-1970s. The mid-riseBiomedicalResearchFacilitywascompletedinlate 1992. HealthSciencesFacilityI (HSFI),aninterdisciplinaryresearchandteachingfacility,wascompletedin 1995. HSFI providesclinicalandbasicsciencedepartmentsandanimalcarefacilitieswithapproximately 80,000additionalnetsquarefeet. HSFIalsoprovidesamuch-neededconnectionfromthe MedicalSchoolTeachingFacilitytoHowardHallandtheBresslerResearchBuilding. Health SciencesFacilityII(HSFII),a 101,000squarefootstate-of-the-artbiomedicalresearchfacility, openedin2003. Thissix-storyresearchbuildinghouseslaboratories,researchofficesand conferencerooms. Allbutonemajormedicalschoolresearchbuildingisphysicallylinkedtothe UniversityofMarylandMedicalCenterandtheBaltimoreVeteransAffairsMedicalCenter. TheUniversityofMarylandcampusinBaltimorecontinuestoexpandaswell.The 137- bedBaltimoreVeteransAffairsMedicalCenter,immediatelyadjacentandconnectedbybridge totheUniversityofMarylandMedicalCenter,joinedthecampusin 1993. GudelskyTower,the newhigh-techUniversityHospitalpatienttoweropenedin 1994,andwasfollowedin 1995by completerestructuringandenhancementofthetwo-blockhospitalfacadeandmainlobby. In 2002themedicalcenteropenedtheHarryandJeanetteWeinbergBuilding. Thespacious 380,000squarefootbuildingincludesthenewsurgicalfacilitywith 19state-of-the-artoperating rooms,calledthe"ORoftheFuture,"adultandpediatricemergencydepartments,anexpanded diagnosticimagingdepartment,acafeteriaandfoodcourt,achapel,apatientresourcecenterto accesshealthinformationandcommunityresources,andanemployeelearningcenter. Completedinlate 1995,theUniversityofMarylandBiotechnologyInstitute'sMedical BiotechnologyCenteroccupiesa 196,000squarefootfacility. Thecenterfocusesonmedical biotechnologyresearchandtrainingandservesasacatalystforeconomicdevelopmentinhealth relatedaspectsofmolecularbiologyandmedicalbiotechnologyatthebasic,appliedandclinical levels. TheHealthandHumanServicesLibraryopenedin 1998; itprovidescutting-edgeservice andamenitiestoitsusersandalsoservesasaRegionalMedicalLibraryoftheNationalLibrary ofMedicine. TheUniversityofMarylandBaltimore TheUniversityofMarylandBaltimore(UMB),isthefoundingcampusofMaryland'spublic universitysystem. Itisathrivingcenterforeducat—ion,patientcare,researchandcommunity service. Sevengraduateandprofessionalschools theGraduate—School,theDentalSchooland SchoolsofLaw,Medicine,Nursing,Pharmacy,andSocialWork togetherwiththeUniversity ofMarylandMedicalSystem,RAdamsCowleyShockTraumaCenter,theBaltimoreVeterans AffairsMedicalCenter—andtheUniversityofMarylandBiotechnologyInstitute'sMedical BiotechnologyCenter educatephysicians,researchscientistsandmanyoftheregion'shealth care,lawandsocialworkpractitioners. With$324millioninsponsoredprogramsupportinFY03,UMBisoneofthefastest growingbiomedicalresearchcentersinthecountry. TheUniversityofMarylandBaltimoreis ideallyconfiguredtomaximizecollaborativeopportunitieswithgovernmentagenciesintackling complexhealthcare,publicpoli—cyandsocietalissues. ItslocationwithintheBaltimore- Washington-Aimapolistriangle atthehubofoneofthegreatestconcentrationsofhealthcare institu—tions,researchfacilities,governmentagenciesandprofessionalassociationsinthe nation offersauniquecombinationofstrengthstocomprehensivelyaddressregionalproblems withtheresultingconclusionshavingthepotentialforglobalimplications. Areasof multidisciplinaryresearch,scholarshipandcommunityactionincludeAIDS,aging,vaccine development,multiplesclerosis,schizophrenia,hypertension,leadpoisoning,cancer,childabuse andhomelessness,offeringstudentsawideselectionoffieldexperiences. PartnershipsamonguniversitycomponentsandwiththeUniversityofMarylandMedical CenterandtheBaltimoreVeteransAffairsMedicalCentercontinuallystrengthen interdisciplinaryresearch,educationandserviceendeavors. Milestones ThefoundationoftheSchoolofMedicinedatesbackto 1789withtheorganizationofthe MedicalSocietyofBaltimoreandBaltimorephysicians' awarenessthattheirnumberswere decreasingfollowingtheRevolutionaryWar. Foreseeingapotentialopportunityforcharlatans to"practice"theartofmedicine,foundersofthemedicalsocietybegantotrainprospective physiciansintheirownhomes,offeringinstructioninanatomy,surgeryandchemistry. Soon facedwithstrongcitizenprotestofanatomicaldissection,thephysician-teacherspetitionedthe MarylandStateLegislaturetoestablishacollegeofmedicineonafirmbasisandunderthe protectionofthelaw. AcharterincorporatingtheCollegeofMedicineofMarylandwas approvedbytheMarylandGeneralAssemblyonDecember 18, 1807. ThefledglingColleg—eofMedicineofMaryla—ndwasinurgentneedofaproperbuilding, andalotterywasauthorized nottoexceed$40,000 tobenefitthemedicalcollege'sbuilding fund. Overthenext 15 years,sevenmorelotterieswereauthorizedtobenefittheschool. Dr.JohnBealeDavidge,anativeMarylandertrainedinScotland,becamethefirstdean andtookthechairinsurgery.
