SSVM 2015 was announced mid-May 2014 and it attracted the at- tentionofanimportantinternationalscientificaudienceofauthorscomingfrommore than 16countries.We received83double-blindsubmissions.Thepapersunderwenta peer-review process similar to that of high-leveljournals in the field: each paper was reviewedbyatleastthreemembersoftheProgramCommitteeaswellasbyotherref- erees.ThereviewsandthepaperswerethenconsideredbytheConferenceChairs.We recognizeP.AriasMartinez,R.Duits,J.Rabin,G.Steidl,andJ.Weickertforsignificant refereeworkonmanuscriptssubmittedtotheconference.Finally,56manuscriptswere retainedforSSVM2015.Amongthem,24articleswereselectedfororalpresentation and32forposterpresentation.Allthese12-pagelengthoriginalarticlesarecontained inthisbook.Abeststudentpaperawardwasgivenduringtheconference. Following the tradition of the previous SSVM conferences, we invited outstand- ingscientiststogivekeynotepresentations.Thisyear, wewerehappytowelcomethe followinginvitedkeynotelectures: (cid:129) Gabriele Steidl (University of Kaiserslautern, Germany): “Second Order Non- SmoothVariationalModelsforRestoringManifold-ValuedImages”; (cid:129) Alfred Hero (University of Michigan, USA): “Combinatorial Continuum Limits andTheirApplications”; (cid:129) Jean-MichelMorel(ÉcoleNormaleSupérieuredeCachan,France):“AReviewof ImageDenoisingMethods”; (cid:129) Marc Teboulle (Tel Aviv University, Israel): “Algorithms for High Dimensional StructuredOptimization.” Also,wehostedtheEditorialBoardmeetingoftheJournalofMathematicalImag- ing and Vision (JMIV) since many members were attending the conference, with the participation of Courtney Clark, Editor at Springer assisting with JMIV. Further, se- lected paperswill be consideredfor a special issue of JMIV “Scale-Spaceand Varia- tionalMethods”thankstotheEditor-in-Chief,JoachimWeickert. We wouldliketothanktheauthorsfortheircontributionsandthemembersofthe ProgramCommitteeandtheotherrefereesfortheirtimeandvaluablecommentsduring the review process. We are grateful to the organizersof the previous editions of this conference for precious tips on how to organize the event: Fiorella Sgallari (SSVM VI Preface 2007),Xue-ChengTai(SSVM2009),YanaKatz(SSVM2011),ArjanKuijper(SSVM 2013)who gave us the most fresh information,as well as Joachim Weickert. Further, wewouldliketothankKarineLecuona,AnnieNadeau, andCathyMétivier(CNRS)for theirenthusiastichelpinfinancialmanagement. Finally, weareluckytoacknowledge the generous support of Cluster of excellence CPU, Institut Universitaire de France, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), and CNRS national network “MathematicsinImagingsciencesandApplications”(GDRMIA). The manuscriptsof all pastSSVM editionswere publishedby Springerin the se- ries Lecture Notes in Computer Science as well: LNCS 4485 (Ischia, Italy 2007), LNCS5567(Voss,Norway2009),LNCS6667(EinGedi,Israel2011),andLNCS7893 (Leibnitz,Austria2013).Itisinterestingtoobservetheevolutionofthetopicscovered bythisconference.Theynaturallyreflecttheprogressofmathematicalandapplication- drivenideasinthefieldaswellastheadventofpowerfulcomputers.Thisisexpressed by the interest in more realistic mathematical models, the use of novel mathematical toolsformodelingandforscientificcomputing, theadvanceintheprocessingofhuge datavolumes(e.g.,invideoandin3D,amongothers).Thesenewtrendsarewellrep- resentedinthisbook.
