David Day The Whale War Norwegian Sea The stench of death struck her like a backhanded slap. Dr. Jan Everett recoiled violently. The pungent odor wrenched tears from her eyes. Bile rose in her throat. Her legs weakened. Hundreds of carcasses of minke whales floated in the choppy waves. A red triangular flag was staked into each kill. The flags stretched like an undulating sea of headstones.
