foundedbyDocLewChildre.Drawinguponthediverseedu-
cational, professional and cultural backgrounds of the

business, education, psychology, physics, math, communi-

cation, music, and art the Institute has developed and
practiced a system of energy-efficiency and self-empower-
ment called HeartMath™. Much of what I will share with
you in this book I discovered while working and growing
side-by-sidewithfriendsattheInstitute.Theyareextremely

Earlier in my life I was lonely, withdrawn, frightened
I ofmyownshadow. Once,whileincollege,Itried tocommit
suicide. Iwasconfused,assomanyyoungpeoplearetoday.
But I was a survivor in life, always knowing there was an
answersomewhere.Igrewuponmilitarybasesandmyfam-
ilywasalwaysmovingfromonebasetoanother. Eachmove
was likea differentmovie thatIhad tojump into. I'dbeone
place andberealpopular. Thenwe'd move to anotherplace
and thekids atschoolwere so differentI'dbe reallyshyand
keep to myself. Trying tobe accepted was abigdeal tome. I
hadtokeepreadjustingtoalotofchangesinlife. Ikeptwon-
dering whywas life like this? Whatwas I doing here? In art
school, I found peace and family. I loved art,but the people
wereevenmoreimportanttome.IgraduatedfromEastCaro-
lina Universitywith a Bachelor ofFine Arts degree and also

took many courses in psychology. I came to realize that life
is about caring for people. That became my ambition. My
realcredentialsforwritingthisbookarethatIpracticedand
practiced truly loving and caring.
Like many people who grew up in the '60s, I was af-
fected by the spirit of that whole decade. When President
Kennedy was shot, I remember exactly where I was in the
schoolyardand thelooksoneveryone's faces. Timeseemed
to have stopped as the entire nation went into shock. The
love that people had for him was an eye-opener for me. I
rememberedthewordsheismostfamousfor,"Asknotwhat
your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your
country." The idealism and openness of the '60s gave my
generationasurgeofhope.Aseedwasplantedthathasbeen
dormant since then. Now in the '90s, I see that our dreanis
weren't idealistic. Theyjust needed time to mature. People
arebeginningtoreawakentowhattheyglimpsedthen: that
love and care for people is what it's all about. Having been
brought up in the military, I was always acutely aware that
they are the caretakers of America. I appreciate the disci-
pline, dedication and service they give our country.
As pollster George H. Gallup Jr., says, "I've always
wantedtoseesurveysthatprobebeneaththesurfaceoflife."
Hissurveysshowthat, "Thedeeperonegoes,themoreopen
one becomes." Thank you. Doc, for your love and care, for
facilitatingmyinnerawakening, forhelpingmeunderstand
the people business and for being a true friend in learning
how to balance it all. And deep thanks to God, for this in-
credible Divine Plan you are unfolding for all humanity.
My universal self would like to say thank you in the
wayKenCareydid inhisbook Vision, Thankyou to: "Holy
Mother, Truth: all matter is her body, the Earth is her eye."
