You know we’re not talking about a hat. SA Derby winners Candy Spots (1963), Codex (1980), and Snow Chief (1986) leap- frogging Kentucky to win the Preakness . . . Avatar (1975) and A.P. Indy (1992) leap-frogging Ever since that fateful London day in 1799 when the 12th Earl of Derby won a coin toss both Louisville and Pimlico to win the Belmont . . . Jockey Gary Stevens winning a record over Sir Charles Bunbury for the honor of naming a then unnamed Thoroughbred feature for nine times, surpassing Bill Shoemaker's record eight wins in 2003 . . . Swaps snubbing the 3-year-olds at Epsom Downs after himself, the old earl’s “Derby”—a race, not a hat—has Preakness and Belmont after winning in Louisville in favor of coming straight home to clean evolved into something truly special and global from Santa Anita to Kentucky and around up at Hollywood Park . . . Your Host winning in 1950 and then siring Kelso . . . On Trust, several other well-known far turns. Silver Spoon, Secretariat-shadow Sham, Flying Paster, Larry The Legend—all legends with Whether the Santa Anita or Kentucky Bunbury would have turned out to be as special or without any more glory in Triple Crown heaven. And how about the 2001 winner, Point is another mystery never to be solved, but it’s no mystery why the Santa Anita Derby has Given? The massive chestnut romped in the Santa Anita Derby, finished fifth in the Kentucky become so special—the foremost clues being named Swaps, Stagehand, On Trust, Your Host, Derby, and then scored decisive victories in the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. A.P. Indy, Silver Spoon, Sham, Affirmed, Sunday Silence, Silky Sullivan, Determine, Indian The Santa Anita Derby definitely stands on its own feet, and here comes old No. 78. Charlie, Avatar, Snow Chief, Cavonnier, Larry The Legend and Point Given, to name just 17 Upon further review, it’s also a lot more than winners and placers. Gallahadion was 13th in winners out of 77. the 1940 Arcadia classic and then won in Kentucky. The SA Derby stands on its own as one of the most colorful and exciting annual sport- Check it out with the Maltese Falcon. That’s the stuff of legends . . . and that’s the Santa ing events in the spectrum, although it has become known primarily as “The Gateway to the Anita Derby. Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown.” Fair enough. Starters in the SA Derby have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby 17 times (John Hall covered Southern Calfornia sports for more than a half-century as a columnist and have captured a total of 40 Triple Crown classics. for the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register.) From Gillie, winner of the first one in 1935, and dynamic Stagehand in 1938, to Affirmed, the wondrous Triple Crown king of 1978, and finally last year’s winner of No. 77, California Chrome, the Santa Anita Derby, indeed, has been something special. Silver Charm and Real Quiet, as it reads on the charts, both scurried right along from duplicate seconds in the 1996 and 1997 renewals to leap to the top with stirring victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and come within photographic inches of Triple Crown sweeps. How close can you get, which is exactly what triple-threat trainer Bob Baffert, near- missing in the Belmont to just barely “incomplete” the gem-of-gem sweeps with both Silver Charm and Real Quiet, is still trying to figure out. Then, in 1999, Santa Anita Derby fourth Charismatic came within a heartbeat of tak- ing the Triple Crown for Silver Charm’s owners, Bob and Beverly Lewis, before injury struck trainer D. Wayne Lukas’ gallant runner near the Belmont finish line. There have been other famous Great Race Place “placers” over the years. In 1994, Tabasco Cat went from second in the SA Derby to wins in both the Preakness and Belmont, Royal Orbit parlayed a Santa Anita second to winning the Preakness in 1959, and Dauber started it all by going from a Santa Anita second to a victory in Maryland in 1938. Of course, it’s not totally fatal to win the Santa Anita Derby in the first place. A remark- able total of 10 SA Derby winners—Hill Gail (1952), Determine (1954), Swaps (1955), Lucky Debonair (1965), Majestic Prince (1969), Affirmed (1978), Winning Colors (1988), Sunday Silence (1989), I'll Have Another (2012) and California Chrome (2014) have gone directly from the Winners’ Circle in Arcadia to the Winners’ Circle at Churchill Downs the fabled first Saturday in May. This is obviously the key reason for the SA Derby’s “Gateway” tag, and it’s a fair billing. But there is more to it than that—as was proved early on like a lightning bolt when Stagehand went straight from his 1938 SA Derby triumph over Dauber to upset Seabiscuit by a 30-pound nose two weeks later in the Big ‘Cap. That can’t ever happen again because 3-year-olds no California Chrome longer are eligible for the Big ‘Cap and the two races now have different dates on the calendar. All the memories are grand—Silky Sullivan charging home from the clouds in 1958 and Affirmed completing the grandest slam of them all with the 1978 Hollywood Derby, SA Derby and Triple Crown, and then coming back to take the 1979 Big ‘Cap and Hollywood Gold Cup. 4 5 History of the first 77 Runnings of the Santa Anita Derby Year Winner Owner Trainer Rider Wt.
