SURELY no man has ever been called upon to make, ordirectthemakingof, somany SongBooksasIhave. It isnolittleconsolationatseventy to knowthat millionsof peoplein everypartof theworldare singingGodspraises togetherasaresultof the effortsHehashelpedmetoput forthortodirectfortheirgood. Yet it has seemed good to me at this timetoattempt somethinglike a thorough selection of those songswhich wehavefoundmostuseful in all lands, sothatmypeople mayhavealarger storehouse of songs that maybe used for all occasions, and that they may the more easily see whatIwouldhave them leave behind, andwhatpreserve, translate, anduse. IthankGodforthegiftsof allHisservants, ancientand modern, whose compositions I have been able to adopt, but it is not intended in any degree to limit the flow of new gongs, for wherever these songs are sung they will causetheproductionof others, and manyhere mayyetbe leftbehind shouldthenumber of ourbestsong-makers be multiplied. I also wish to prevent the lowering of our standard, thetasteof ourpeople and the characterof our service,by the use of songs that may have some worldly popularityjustbecausetheyarenotsodefiniteorsohotas these. Let others,if they please, heap together pretty poetry and sing it to what is called "refined music." Letus persevere in oursinging of the simple old truths in the simple old hearty way that God has already blessed so widelytothesalvationofsoulsandthemakingandtraining of red-hotsoldiers. But,aboveall, letmeurgeallwho possess this bookto maketheutmostuseof itin threeways: 1. Takeinthemeaningofeverysong. Howthoughtlessly manysingfamiliarwords. Yet hereisagreat treasuryof truthifyouwillbutsearchintoitsriches. Bedetermined iv. thatbyGods graceyou will neversing what you do not reallymeanandthatyouwillbefittedtosing all you find here. 2. Sing andread and teach these songs to your children, morning and evening, at birthday celebrations and other familyfunctions, aswellastothesickandtoallwhomyou caninfluence. Whatadebtmany of ue owe tothe songs we learnt in childhood! What clear-thinking, plain- speaking, God-knowing Salvationists will those be who have properly learnedwhat these songs contain. Banish from your homes and children hymns and songsthatare notstraightandplain. 3. Singsoastomake the worldhear. Therecannot be a greaterfarce than for people to sing these songs athome andinourbarracksamongstadmiringlisteners, unlessthey sing them also to the world. The highest value of our singing after all has not been the meregladnesswe have felt because of our own salvation, but the joy of pouring out the praises of our God to thosewhohave notknown Him,or of arousing themby our singingto newthoughts andanewlife. And sing till your whole soul is lifted up to God, and ttoheHnisminwghtoillisyotuhelfifotutnhteaienyeosfaolfltohuorsejoyw.ho knownot God WILLIAM BOOTH.
