Sale of the Ken Bauer Collection of Civil War Era Exonumia ________ January 2022 Dear Fellow Collectors and Civil War Token Enthusiasts, I have been collecting Civil War tokens for nearly fifty years and throughout this time have strived to obtain the best examples possible of the token designs that interested me. In many cases this involved making one or even several upgrades. Over the years I have sold off the undergrades and tokens which just ceased to please me any longer. I am a stickler for eye appeal, so what is being offered here is the best I could find over the decades. At this point in my life I find it necessary to part with the majority of these little gems. In the pages that follow you will find many high-quality examples of common Patriotics R1 through R3, scarce and rare circulation examples, and rare, glistening, struck-for-contemporary-collector examples. As for storecards, my collecting tastes ran towards the reverse dies, so you will find nice examples of those, but less in the way of rare towns or merchants. If you find a token on this list that you have been looking for, you’d be well-off to just buy it rather than wait, it might be a long time until you find a nicer one. You might ask yourself what would you have to pay for it when you see it again in this condition? And how long will you have to go with an inferior example in your collection or none at all? Many of these tokens appear as plate example pictures in the latest Patriotic and Storecard catalogs. When that is the case, it is so noted in the description (PCv6 for the Patriotic catalog and SC3 for the Storecards). The resolution of the attached pictures is 300x300, which should give you a look at the details. Expanding the .pdf document will redraw the pictures with greater detail. Higher resolution pictures will be gladly emailed upon request (640x640, 1028x1028, or higher as needed.) All but fourteen of these tokens are raw. Some have been previously encapsulated by NGC. When that is the case, it is so noted in the description and the original label will be included in the sale. I am not a dealer nor a professional numismatist, so my listed grade is my opinion and may be different from that of a CWT dealer, NGC or PCGS. Given the picture resolution, I don’t expect there will be any surprises with respect to hidden scratches or token problems. As for poor surfaces, retoning etc., again I’m a stickler for quality and have avoided adding any such tokens to my collection. In general, all sales are final. However, I want everyone to be happy with their purchases, so if you’re not pleased, let me know what’s going on and I’ll try to make it right. Also, if you submit your purchase to PCGS and they give you a grade significantly different from how I described it, I will refund your purchase price (but not the grading fee or postage) in return for the encapsulated token. Finally, I am grateful for the CWT community and the opportunity I have had to meet, work with, talk tokens with, and generally share my enthusiasm for CWT. I have enjoyed friendships and business relationships with many of the paragons of CWT collecting in the past 50 years as is reflected in the purchase and pedigree information provided with each token. I look forward to adding you to my list of Civil War Token enthusiasts!
