SAINT AGNES HOSPITAL ANNUAL REPORT 2015 A VISION REALIZED ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Dauntless courage. Unwavering dedication. Determined faith. The Daughters of Charity built Saint Agnes in 1862 on the foundation of these leadership attributes, inspired by the healing ministry of Jesus to provide quality health care for all who needed it — especially those who were poor and vulnerable. Their pioneering legacy has been reaffirmed and renewed over the past decade as Saint Agnes has transformed both its facilities and its clinical services to meet our community’s needs for the foreseeable future. Saint Agnes has been blessed with visionary leadership, then and now, guiding us on our mission. This report celebrates A Vision Realized — the transformation of facilities and programs which have been achieved in recent years and the community partners who have joined Saint Agnes in our journey to a healthier future. Introduction | 1 LEADERSHIP BONNIE PHIPPS Group Operating Executive, SVP, Ascension Health “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.” Henry David Thoreau said it — but our founders, the Daughters of Charity, lived it in their dedication to community and mission. I have had the great honor to lead Saint Agnes as its president and CEO since 2005, and together we have forged new dreams and seen many of them realized. As I transition to a regional role with Ascension, I leave the administration of Saint Agnes in the care of our excellent executive team, and I am confident that the future of Saint Agnes will be as brilliant as our cross, lighting up the Southwest Baltimore sky. PATRICK MUTCH Interim President & CEO, Saint Agnes Healthcare It is no exaggeration to say that Saint Agnes stands poised at the brink of a new and transformed healthcare market. As the ground shifts around us and health reform changes the way we deliver care and help our patients, we remain devoted to our traditional values while seeking new and innovative ways to help our com- munity. I am honored to serve the hospital, our community, and our supporters as we accomplish our goals and realize the vision of our founders, reaffirming the hope and joy of our ministry. PAUL CHEW Chair, Saint Agnes Healthcare Board of Directors I am privileged to serve Saint Agnes as Chair of its Board of Directors during such an exciting time in the history of our organization. One need only stroll through the campus, or walk into the main lobby, to understand the transformational im- pact which began with our campus expansion and capital campaign in 2005 and continues today with Gibbons Commons and other cutting-edge initiatives. Saint Agnes has been a cornerstone of Baltimore City health care for more than 150 years, and I am proud to support the organization as we face the future together. 2 | Leadership TABLE OF CONTENTS OUR UNCOMMON VISION 4 OUR SHARED MISSION 18 COMMUNIty BENEfIt 26 fINANCIAl REpORt 27 fOUNDAtION 28 DONORS 29 HERItAgE SOCIEty 35 OUR ENDURINg lEgACy 36 lEADERSHIp 37 Table of Contents | 3 the new Main Entrance to Saint Agnes represents the modern, welcoming atmosphere — and excellent clinical care — which patients and guests will find within. 4 | Our Uncommon Vision OUR UNCOMMON VISION Saint Agnes leadership displayed uncommon foresight and vision in 2005 when they made the bold choice to remain in the hospital’s present location and renew the hospital’s commitment to mission and service in Southwest Baltimore. Just 10 years later, Saint Agnes has been transformed and is poised at the beginning of a new era in community health and care. Our hospital campus is a vibrant, state-of-the-art destination as a result of the Beacon of Hope Capital Campaign and the successful campus expansion project. The new Saint Agnes Senior Emergency Department, the first of its kind in Baltimore and only the second in Maryland, is quickly becoming a model for hospitals nationwide. And, beyond the traditional boundaries of our historic home, Gibbons Commons and Saint Agnes Medical Group, Catonsville are leading the way in innovative models of community care which reaches out — and reaches more families along the way. “I feel that we have achieved our vision. Saint Agnes has always had an extremely talented medical staff and associates committed to our mission, to our patients, and to each other. Now we have facilities that match our mission.” Bonnie Phipps, Group Operating Executive, SVP, Ascension Health Our Uncommon Vision | 5 NEW PHOTO Male nurse, female doctor, Sister Vincentia, with Gibbons Commons in the background out the window the Main lobby of Saint Agnes features the stunning Spun Gracesculpture, designed by noted Baltimore artist Mary Ann Mears to bring peace and comfort to all who enter our doors. 6 | Our Uncommon Vision Our Beacon of Hope Shines On When the Saint Agnes Board of Directors Small, Foundation President, who joined Saint decided to stay at the hospital’s historic Caton Agnes in 2010 when the campaign had raised Avenue location, they did so with the commit- about $10 million but was stalled in its progress. ment to renovate and expand the existing facili- “Barbara Bozzuto, Campaign Chair, and others ties to position Saint Agnes for future success. on the board were very involved, and we saw tremendous interest and commitment in the Even with generous support from Ascension, effort.” Saint Agnes needed to raise an unprecedented amount of capital in order to accomplish the Bonnie Phipps said she was overwhelmed by most ambitious expansion in its 150-year history. the outpouring of support from community Thus the Beacon of Hope Capital Campaign — the partners.
