These programs have been developed as part of a community policing effort to promote an attitude of mutual understanding, courtesy and cooperation among Illinois citizens, while emphasizing the need for strict adherence to state laws. Through these programs/presentations it is our goal to educate citizens in order to reduce crime in Illinois, and to prevent serious injuries or even fatalities from occurring. The presentations conducted by Safety Education Officers exemplify the department’s commitment to the fulfillment of its mission, specifically the goals stating: “We act to promote and sustain a safe, orderly, and positive environment for all people in the State of Illinois.” “We seek... to serve as a valuable resource in support of our state, its government, and its people by providing highway and public safety...”. Illinois State Police Officers, particularly Safety Education Officers, have a keen insight into traffic safety issues. This insight is gained through patrol experience, training and attendance at progressive seminars and conferences. These factors, combined with extensive training and updates on the most current teaching techniques, mold our Safety Education Officers into the most qualified presenters. Requests for programs/presentations are from groups of various ages and backgrounds. Many requests are from schools, youth and fraternal organizations, clubs, companies, and banks. Safety Education Officers also participate in annual fairs and auto shows. The Illinois State Police, Safety Education Officers are available to deliver a variety of traffic safety education and crime prevention presentations. Demand for SEO services is great, necessitating programs be scheduled as much as six weeks in advance. Programs may range from 30 minutes to several hours. The following is a list of programs available through the Illinois State Police, Safety Education Office. Adults/Senior Citizens/Women Defensive Driving This program/presentation certified by the National Safety Council instructs drivers on safe driving techniques and traffic laws. Attendees will be taught the importance of wearing safety belts, the dangers of mixing alcohol and driving, the major factors adversely affecting driving and some suggested techniques for improving defensive-driving skills. Senior citizens who successfully complete the course may qualify for insurance discounts. The duration of this training is six to eight hours. Attendees must purchase a workbook at a nominal fee, provided by Illinois State Police, through the NSC. This program is not-for-profit. Occupant Restraint This program/presentation emphasizes the importance of using safety belts and child safety seats in vehicles and provides information on current occupant restraint laws. Attendees are instructed in the proper use of occupant restraint devices. An ISP roll-over simulator is available, schedule permitting, to demonstrate what happens to unrestrained individuals involved in a roll-over type crash. Operation Lifesaver This program/presentation was designed to reduce the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities at rail-highway intersections. This public education program is sponsored cooperatively by federal, state, local and governmental agencies and other groups interested in highway safety. Self-Protection This program/presentation was designed to educate all ages on safeguards to prevent potentially dangerous situations from occurring. Presentations ety Education Progr| may be tailored to the meet the needs of the requestors. Topics include self-protection for women, home security, driving safeguards, utilization of weapons, confronting an attacker and what someone should do if they are sexually assaulted. Fraud This program/presentation was designed to educate the public, especially senior citizens, about “scams” and other types of related criminal activities and how to combat the problem. Scams discussed include home repair fraud, utility employee impersonators, home diversion burglary, the pigeon drop, the bank examiner scam and the letter scam. Students/Parents Alcohol Abuse Prevention This program/presentation covers the consequences of alcohol abuse, as it relates to traffic safety, DUI, and the Zero Tolerance law. Presenters address DUI arrest procedures and penalties. Also discussed are issues and sanctions associated with providing alcohol to persons under 21, illegally transporting alcohol and permitting an under-the- influence driver to operate a vehicle. Attendees are told the proper method to report a suspected drunk driver. Driver's Education This program/presentation targeted toward teenagers at statewide high schools, covers the law and safe driving techniques. Students are exposed to the law enforcement perspective of the vehicle code. Teenage drinking and driving issues, especially zero tolerance provisions, are stressed. The presenter reiterates the life-saving benefits of safety belt use and reminds students a leading cause of crashes is speeding. Drug Awareness This program/presentation covers the consequences of drug abuse, as it relates to traffic safety and the current laws. Areas discussed during this presentation include types of drugs, dealing with peer influences and alternatives to drug use. Gangs This program/presentation was designed to educate teenagers as well as the general public on gangs and criminal activity. This program deals with gang awareness, how to deal with gangs in a community and how to prevent gang activity. Parents are taught to recognize the signs of gang involvement by their children. Cults This program/presentation examines Satanic activity, traits of teenage cult members and makes recommendations for parental involvement. Young Children/Parents Stranger Danger This program/presentation was designed to educate children and adults on how to guard against abduction and other potentially dangerous situations for children. Presenters define “stranger,” discuss the lures used by molesters and abductors, describe places where children are most vulnerable to abductors and provide tips for reporting suspicious activities. Parents are encouraged to use role-playing exercises to reinforce child safety techniques. Child Abuse This program/presentation covers child abuse laws and procedures for reporting suspected abuse. School Bus Safety This program/presentation was designed to reduce the number of injuries and deaths of school age children through school bus safety education for educators, bus drivers and children. Bicycle Safety This program/presentation covers laws relating to the operation of a bicycle on the road, safe biking tips, and the importance of wearing a helmet. With the growing popularity of biking, this program can be tailored to adult audiences. Rural Interests Farm Safety This program/presentation was developed to alert motorists and farmers about farm safety as it relates to traffic safety on public roads. Implements of husbandry are defined, registration and testing of drivers and vehicles is discussed and the rules of the road pertaining to farm vehicles and equipment are described. Presenters address farm theft prevention and what to do in the event a farmer is the victim of a theft. Business Interests Workplace Security This program/presentation provides businesses with information on how to ensure a safe workplace with tips on various precautions to take and procedures to follow. Special Interest ISP Career This program/presentation provides general information on Illinois State Police careers. Brochures are available. K-9 This program/presentation provides the history of the Illinois State Police K-9 Unit, selection procedures of dogs and handlers, training, assigned duties, effectiveness and demonstrations.
