SOCIETY ETHNOMUSICOLOGY FOR MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY WITH INDEX TO MEMBERSHIP INTERESTS 1991 SOCIEH ETHNOMUSICOLOGY FOR MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY WITH INDEX TO MEMBERSHIP INTERESTS 1991 PREFACE The object of the Society for Ethnomusicology shall be the advancement of research and study in the field of ethnomusicology, for which purpose all interested persons, regardless of race, creed, color, or national origin are encouraged to become members. Its aims include serving the membership and society at large through the dissemination of knowledge concerning the music of the world's peoples. The Society for Ethnomusicology is multidisciplinary in concept and worldwide in scope. Currently the Society has over 2,000 individual and institutional members from many countries. The membership includes scholars, students, performers, publishers, museum specialists, archivists, and librarians from numerous disciplines. 1 EDITOR'S NOTES This directory provides names, addresses, and interests of Society for Ethnomusicology members as of January, 1991. All individual members are listed alphabetically by last name. Asterisks indicate previous or current council members. Institutional members are also listed alphabetically, according to the name of the institution. At the recommendation of the SEM Board, no attempt was made to separate members by country. Following the name and address information, there is a listing of areas of interest which was gleaned from a membership survey. In the survey, members were asked to list as many as three geographical/cultural areas, and three theoretical/topical areas of Interest. An index of those interests is provided in the second part of the directory. As a controlled vocabulary was not established prior to the survey, each member chose those terms which were most meaningful to him/her. However, to enhance the usefulness of an index to such interests, the editor exercised some judgement by combining like terms. In some instances, it was a simple matter of merging "United States” with "US", "USA", and "United States of America." Other times, it meant combining different names for the same group, such as "Native Americans" and "American Indians." If there was any guestion as to whether terms should be combined, they were left in their original forms. The terms listed with a member's name and address are those provided by the member. Due to the above-mentioned circumstances, the headings found in the index may not exactly correspond to those terms. Please report any errors in names or addresses to the SEN office, so that they may be corrected in future directories. The Society for Ethnomusicology constitution was not printed in this directory due to space limitations. A copy of the constitution is available from the Business Office at the address below.
