We are proud that this year’s S-BPM ONE was able to continue and even strengthen the tradition of facilitating the discourse of researchers, developers, educatorsandpractitioners.Forthefirsttime,thecontributionstoS-BPMONE 2012 are published in two distinct volumes, reflecting the rising awareness of subject-oriented business process management in academia as well as industry and education. During the second half of 2011 we conducted a survey into the quali- ty and state of the art of business process management. The survey results – based on face to face interviews as well as responses to an online questionnaire from 150 companies – provide a good indication of the challenges companies are facing when designing, implementing and operating processes. In this paper we present an overview of the main results and provide some discussion of their implications. Keywords: Process quality, design defects, implementation errors, training and education. 1 Introduction In a keynote presentation in 2010 we put forward the argument that while available functional capabilities of business process management systems (BPMS) had vastly increased over the past 10 years, this development has not been mirrored in the capa- bilities of companies to make use of BPMS[2] in the sense of • creating processes more swiftly, more efficiently, with fewer errors, • of implementing said processes to a higher level of satisfaction from the point of view of the business users • operating and running the processes with an inherent management component. In order to validate these points of view, the taraneon Process TestLab in close coop- eration with the University of Applied Sciences Koblenz (FH Koblenz) decided to conduct an in-depth study into current practices in enterprises. The objectives of the study were to • identify current approaches to designing, implementing and operating business processes • elicit survey participant assessments of the perceived quality of these tasks • identify general areas of concern but also to • derive – where possible – best-practice approaches.
