SUGGESTING MUTUALLY SUPPORTIVE PASTORAL CARE FOR PEOPLE WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA AND THEIR FAMILIES IN THE KOREAN CHURCH: A GROUNDED THEORY AND PRACTICAL THEOLOGY OF HOSPITALITY APPROACHES A Professional Project presented to the Faculty of Claremont School of Theology In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Ministry by Taehyun Ryu May 2019 Copyright © 2019 by Taehyun Ryu This Professional Project completed by Taehyun Ryu has been presented to and accepted by the faculty of Claremont School of Theology in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the DOCTOR OF MINISTRY Faculty Committee Yong Hwan Kim, Chairperson Namjoong Kim Dean of the Faculty Sheryl A. Kujawa-Holbrook May 2019 ABSTRACT SUGGESTING MUTUALLY SUPPORTIVE PASTORAL CARE FOR PEOPLE WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA AND THEIR FAMILES IN THE KOREAN CHURCH: A GROUNDED THEORY AND PRACTICAL THEOLOGY OF HOSPITALITY APPROACHES By Tae Hyun Ryu This Professional Project was initiated with my experience and interest in schizophrenic and their family (hereinafter: referred to as ‘the Least’). The lack of understanding and prejudice of the mental illness and the difficulties of the caring family, they are not fully accepted in the community of faith, so they became aware of the necessity of pastoral care of the community of faith. For this project, I conducted qualitative research in the form of in-depth interviews and counseling with the rehabilitating schizophrenia, the caring family and church members. As a result, the studies, the Least were living a life of faith in the loss of the relationship between epistemological prejudice and indifference. I found that general believers also have a lack of relational spirituality due to the personalized centered life of faith. Through this study, I wanted to say that the schizophrenic and their caregivers are the Least ones receiving Jesus reception as wounded neighbors. I also emphasized the need to understanding the practical theology of relational theology, hospitality theology, disabled theology, intentional theology with such understandings of psychiatry. Finally, the ministry of the support group was suggested by the method of healing and recovery ministry through spiritual growth of the Least ones. I hope that the Korean church community will seek the identity of the community of faith through the pastoral caring ministry for the Least ones. Key Words: ‘the Least’ ‘Family Pathology’ ‘Hospitality Community’ ‘Difference, Tolerance of Diversity’ and ‘Pastoral Care’. SUMMARY This Professional Project is a study on the pastoral care of the church community for schizophrenic and their family (hereinafter: referred to as ‘the Least’). It is a psychiatric disorder of brain disorder in which the function of social relations or self-management is deteriorated due to disorders such as delusions, hallucinations and disruptive language. This disease is known contributor to diseases caused by genetic, biological vulnerability, but the psychological impact of environmental factor is also considered important. Also, before the development of psychiatry, the disease was sometimes misunderstood as a demonic disease. Those who are alienated from the human network are our wounded neighbors and ‘the Least’ that Jesus mentioned. This Professional Project is a study on the professional care ministry to which they should aim at qualitative research on the reality of the pastoral care of the church community for the Least. The purpose of this study is to find out how they are being accepted in the church community and how difficulties they are experiencing in the faith community. The qualitative research method, as described in Chapter 2, investigated the relationship between schizophrenic, their family and the church members who attend them and the role of the faith community. As a result of these researches, ‘the Least’ were living a life of faith in epistemological prejudice and loss of relational, I was able to find out that the general believers are experiencing a lack of relational spirituality due to the personalized centered life of faith. ‘The Least’ were not able to actively participate in the church community because of their low self-esteem, and I could reveal that they have a boundary with the general believers and are not understood. In addition to i patients suffering schizophrenia, it was found that lack of enough care for many members and their families who suffered from depression and other psychiatric disorder. In detail, five main categories, eleven subcategories, and twenty-four topics were derived. The five main categories are ‘epistemological prejudice’ ‘loss of relationship’ ‘acceptance and tolerance of difference’ ‘transformation to a community of faith’ and ‘practice of support group ministry for the Least’. By interpreting these qualitative research results from the viewpoint of practical theology, I propose a method of pastoral caring ministry for these Least. In Chapter 3, I discuss the diagnosis, cause of onset, and treatment method of psychiatric diagnosis of schizophrenia. In particular, I have discussed the perspectives of discrimination between schizophrenia and demon-possessed man. The content of this Chapter will support epistemological prejudice and discrimination, one of the topics of qualitative research. Chapter 4 discussed practical theological content of pastoral care for the Least. To overcome the loss of relational and the absence of acceptance and tolerance among the studied subjects, the expansion of interrelationships with the Least and the hospitality of their differences from the perspective of Jesus were most important in pastoral care. Also, the focus of care the Least is on their spiritual growth through continuous and professional ministry. In Chapter 5, I studied the contents of practical theology which supports the topics of this thesis, such as relational theology, hospitality theology, disabled theology, intentional theology. Finally, I propose a methodology of support group ministry which is a professional caring ministry as a method for spiritual growth and restoration of the Least. ii The originality of this study suggests a plan of transformation into a community of Jesus that aims for hospitality and caring by studying the interrelationships between ‘the Least’ and the general believers. Now, the Korean church community should recognize the pain of ‘the Least’ and open the ministry of caring for spiritual restoration and spiritual growth, specially earnestly desire to become schizophrenic and their families to care actively made this holistic healing and spiritual restoration in the community of faith. iii
