You become less and less concerned with the world of work. And as your children—then your grandchildren—start to lead their own lives, your part in their future ever more noticeably starts to diminish. What is more, your memory of the distant past comes into sharper focus. You start to see things that you did not see before; the hindsight of the years you’ve put behind you allows you to make sense of what you once failed to understand or mistook for something else. Nothing makes me more aware of this than looking through the dozens of notebooks that I kept for many years and have not gotten around to sorting out.1 For a long time I have been nursing the idea of writing a book about the Middle East.2 It is a region I have followed for half a cen- tury as a journalist, academic, and politician—as a correspondent for Pravda; as deputy director (and later director) of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations at the USSR Academy of Sciences; at the Academy’s Institute of Oriental Studies; as head of the SVR (Russia’s foreign intelligence service); as Russian foreign minis- ter, as Russian prime minister, and as a deputy in the Duma, Russia’s parliament. There are events in the Middle East—many of them subject to false rumors—that have unfolded before my very own eyes. Some of these events either are not known about or have been forgotten. Meanwhile they have played a huge role in making the region what it is today— –ix–
