Yes we do exist, although our numbers have been greatly reduced! Initiated by then council member, the late Mike Murray, we were an enthusiastic volunteer group linked with others to form the North Island Recycling Society. We were able to apply for government grants to purchase equipment and a vehicle for RDMW. When it became cost in-efficient the RDMW stopped routine pick ups in our towns, leaving us to fend for ourselves. And this is how it stands today. With assistance from our Village, we employ an adult depot supervisor and 2 student workers. Our recycled items are picked up weekly by Island Foods and taken to RDMW site at 7 Mile. We can only collect what they will accept. Many new residents are used to recycling, it is a way of life in major cities, often recycling is picked up more times than the garbage. With no residential pick ups, we must bring ours to the Municipal Transfer Station and the Recycling Depot (located in the Public Works building) aka Inside Depot. With the Transfer Station access hours being reduced from 24\7, our society opens the Inside Depot and yard an extra 12 hours\week for your convenience. TUESDAYS 4:00-8:00pm SATURDAYS 10:00-2:00pm SUNDAYS 2:00-6:00pm Recycling is all about SORTING and COLLECTING materials to be REPROCESSED, that is why it is very important not to mix the sorts or add contaminated materials. Please pay special attention to our directional signs at the covered area, and make every effort to bring your paper items while the Inside Depot is open. Watch for further recycling information each month. You can contact me at 250 284-3215. To the Community Members of Port Alice, I would like to thank you for all your support for our local school, Sea View Elementary Junior Secondary School. As a new resident to the community and a new teacher to the school, I appreciate the close relationship the community has with the school. It is only in small communities, such as Port Alice, that you are able to have these connections. Coming from a big city, teaching abroad, and traveling to other overpopulated countries I have come to realize how lucky I am to be here in Port Alice. For such a small and remote community, it does have a lot to offer. It is such a treat to have the ocean out your front door and the mountains out your back door. As a new teacher to the school and district I am in awe over the amount of technology and resources that are available to the students. I am very excited to be living in Port Alice and teaching at Sea View School. I am looking forward to carrying out our school plan, which involves utilizing the outdoors for learning and integrating technology. We also hope to connect with many of you and draw on your knowledge and expertise to further students learning. I look forward to working with you in the future. Thank you again. Mrs. Kara McPherson Primary Teacher Page 6 of 24 The Rumble Sheet Author Alan Cumyn Is coming to Sea View Elementary-Jr Secondary School from Oct 11th - 14th to provide education and inspiration to students and staff. ALAN CUMYN Alan Cumyn is the award-winning author of eleven wide-ranging and often wildly different novels, seven for adults, three for children and one for young adults. His historical novels The Sojourn and The Famished Lover chronicle the First World War and Great Depression experiences of artist Ramsay Crome. His human rights novels, Man of Bone and Burridge Unbound, follow a torture victim through survival and post-trauma. Losing It is a darkly funny and truly twisted novel about madness, while his Owen Skye books for kids--The Secret Life of Owen Skye, After Sylvia and Dear Sylvia-- hilariously trace the calamitous trials of childhood and the pangs of early love. Cumyn's newest novel, Tilt, is a funny, sexy exploration of a teenaged boy's obsessions as he lives through an impossibly absurd time of life. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ For more information on the literacy works of Alan Cumyn visit his website at www.alancumyn.com Look for these youth titles written by Alan Cumyn Mr. Cumyn will be visiting the Port Alice Library October 13th, 7:00-9:00pm To be confirmed Page 7 of 24 The Rumble Sheet A BIG THANK YOU TO NEUCEL SPECIALTY CELLULOSE for the very generous donation they made to Henny Penny Preschool! It is because of support like this we are able to continue to offer this very important service to our community! The Good Samaritan Virtually every crash scene that I attended during my policing career featured at least one good Samaritan. These were people who stopped to help another in a time of need, often at some risk to themselves. This kind of selflessness is encouraged with protection granted by law in British Columbia. The Good Samaritan Act protects a lay person who is providing emergency aid to injured people at an accident scene. The protection applies unless the rescuer is grossly negligent in their actions. Gross negligence is any action or an omission in reckless disregard of the consequences to the safety or property of another. However, before you jump in to help at the next collision, remember that unless you have first aid training and know what to do it is best to do the least necessary to preserve life and prevent worsening of the injury. Paramedics are quick to caution that it is very easy to do significant damage instead applying treatment. If you have access to a cell phone, a 911 call will provide expert guidance from paramedical personnel if you are willing to remain connected and provide accurate information. Following this guidance will produce the best out- come for the injured. Should communication not be available, be cautious so that you won't make a bad situation worse and need the protection of the Good Samaritan Act.
