Thenewspecieshasleafbladesbroadlyovate,obtusetoroundedatthe baseasR.occidentalisandoftenwithstronglystipitateglandulartrichomes coveringthestemsandinflorescence.Itdiffersinitsflowers3—4cmlong, thebasaltubeofthecorolla8—12mmlong,thecalyxlobeslongerthanthe basaltube,thecleistogamousflowersunknownanditsdistribution,asmarked inthekeybelow.TharpandBarkley(1949)gavethenameR. occidentalis 226 SiDA18(1) WAt.ferrisaetoaspecimenfromthemountainsnearMonterrey,NuevoLeon whichisrecognizedbyHenricksonandJohnston(inpress)bythisname forthespecimensdescribedhere.Thetypespecimenfrom theMonterrey areahasoblong-obovateleafblades,lacksstipitateglandsonstemandleaves andflowerdimensionsthatbetterfitwithR.nudiflora,acommonspecies inMonterreyarea.Thepopulationsoftheproposedspeciesgrowallopatri- callyinanisolatedareaatthesouthwesterncorneroftheChihuahuanDesert RegionwhilemostoftherelatedspeciesaredistributedintheeasternSi- erraMadreOriental(Turner1991)- ThethreespeciesofRuelliapreviously mentionedcanbeseparated by thefollowingkey: i.Leafbladesovatetoelliptic-obovate,mostlylessthan3cmwide,sparselyto moderatelypubescent;lowerinternodespubertilenttoglabrate R.nudiflora 1.Leafbladesbroadlyovatetosubdeltoid,4-7(—9)cmwide,usuallydensely pubescent;lowerinternodeswithabundantstipitateglands 2 2.Flowers(chasmogamous)4.5-5.5{—6.5)cmlong;basaltubeofthecorolla 2.5—3.5cmlong,longerthanthecalyxlobes;cleistogamousflowers(smaller thanthechasmogamous)frecuentlylocatedinthelowernodes;seTexas, neMexico(eCoah,neN.L.,Tamps,neVcr.)
