I am delighted that this great exhibition is taking place here, since it successfully evokes the Rudoifine era and the wealth of inspiration slumbering within it, which, I am firmly convinced, can address contemporary humanity in fundamental ways. oe~.,..MtJ~a __ ~ ~ [V] CON T EN T S Foreword V VACLAV H AVEL Preface viii E LISKA Fu CfKOVA Acknowledgments X Contributors xii IMPERIAL COURT Prague Casde under Rudolf II, His Predecessors and Successors, 1530-1648 2 ELISKA F u CfKOVA In the Name of God: Religious Struggles in the Empire, 1555-1648 H ERBET HAUPT King Ferdinand I of Bohemia, Archduke Ferdinand II and the Prague Court, 1527-1567 So M ADELON SIMONS Architectural Styles in the Reign of Rudolf II: Italian and Hispanic Influences 9 ! Ibe halls of the Prague Rudolfinum contained 262 exhibits - in reality around 350 objects, paintings, sculptures, drawings, miniatures, graphics, decorative arts, astronomical and measuring instruments, medals, coins, books and archival materials. Eighty years on, Prague has the honour once again to present the works of masters whom Kare[ Chytil described in the introduction to the 1912 exhibition catalogue as 'the most exquisite talents' of the Rudolfine era. Ibis time, however, the exhibition is being held within the halls of Prague Castle - the authentic environment in which these artists were active. Ibe difference between the two exhibitions does not lie only in the number of exhibits. Chytil also wrote that many of the Rudolfine talents 'were, of course, eclectics and mannerists'. Although the last decades of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries saw the publication of monographs on the most important artists at the court of Rudolf II and the gradual unveiling of archival sources on the Rudolfine era, the per-iod was indeed considered to have been eclectic and Mannerist and to have contributed little to the future development of art and science. lt was not until later, when Mannerism was being reappraised, that Rudolfine art was recognized as one of its closing phases. Ibe exhibition Prag um 1600: Kunst und Kultur am Hofe Rudolfs II, held in 1988 in Essen and Vienna, was the first presentation of these new findings, including characteristic examples of works by Rudolfine masters and outlining the reasons why they deserved a respected place in the history off ine art. Ibe success of Prag um 1600 provided the organizers of the present exhibition with the incentive to create a show which would evoke the memory of one of the most important, unjustly neglected periods in Czech history. Rudolf II and Prague is not meant as a mere repetition of the 1988 exhibition. lt has taken advantage of the authentic environment of Prague by installing the works not only at Prague Castle but also in the city itself, which, thanks to the presence of the imperial court for more than 30 years, was transformed into a major European metropolis. When Rudolf II died and bis successors moved back to Vienna, the digni.fied Wallenstein Palace saw itself as a fitting competitor for Prague Castle. lts architecture and interior decoration have, for the most part, survived in their original form; thus the Wallenstein Riding Hall provides the ideal space for the City section of the exhibition, with the palace itself becoming one of the exhibits. Ibe Court section of the exhibition will allow visitors to see some of the most fascinating examples of Castle architecture .from the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, reflections of the industrious building activities commissioned by the first Habsburgs an the Czech throne. [ viii ] P R E F A C E Visitors to these halls will discover the .functions of the imperial court and its illustrious figures, artists and scholars and the results of their work, the music of the era and so on. The situation of Rudolf II and Prague is therefore reminiscent of its famous predecessor of r 9 r 2; however, the basic approach is not only complemented by a far greater selection of exhibits but also provides much more detailed and extensive information about Rudolf II as a monarch, patron of the arts and collector, about the learned and artistic colony at bis court and about bis collections and the works created under bis liberal patronage. Despite the Jact that this is the largest project to date to concern itself with Rudolf II and bis era - a project which would not have been possible without enthusiastic international co-operation - it does not claim to be exhaustive, nor could it be. The organizers of the 1912 exhibition were able to show Dürer's Feast of the Rosaries without having considered whether the painting might be damaged during transport and installation. Today Hans van Aachen's wonderful paintings executed on alabaster, Roelandt Savery's bouquets painted on wooden panels and ']oris Hoefnagel's illuminated manuscripts remain safely in storage due to the dangers of transporting them over /arge distances, as do the bronze statues of Adriaen de Vries. Despite these gaps, the exhibition's organizers have endeavoured to put together the widest and most diverse selection of exhibits possible in order to present the most complete picture of the period. Exhibitions such as this will always bring to light new works, unfamiliar names, fresh knowledge; they will initiate further research which will take our awareness considerable steps forwards. And if Rudolf II and Prague also delights and fascinates visitors, then the enormous amount of work involved in its preparation will not have been in vain.
