James WeldonJohnson The composer, born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1871, attended Atlanta University. His subsequent careers as a public school principal, lawyer, diplomat, executive secretary for the NAACP and professor of creative literature at FiskUniversityparalleledhis growth andmaturity as apoet andman ofletters. At the time ofhis death in 1938, he was regardedas one ofthe foremost African Americans ofhis generation, (from ThePo- etry oftheNegro, 1746-1970, edited by Langston Hughes and Arna Bon- temps). Reception immediatelyfollowingtheceremonyin room 200ofthe StudentCenter. The Keynote Speaker Joseph D. Feaster, Jr. is Counsel to the Boston law & A firm ofMcKenzie Edwards, P.C. graduate of Northeastern University and Northeastern University School ofLaw, Mr. Feaster has also completed programs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Center for Real Estate Development and Harvard University'sJohn F. Kennedy School of Government. Currently Mr. Feaster is President ofFeaster Enterprises, a consultant firm engaged in strategic planning, organizational development, board development and community outreach. Mr. Feaster's community and civic activities are numerous and varied. He served as President ofthe NAACP Boston Branch ofthe for two terms and as President ofthe Northeastern University School of Law Alumni Association. He is chairman ofDimock Community Health Center's Board ofDirectors and a member ofmany organizations including the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association. Mr. Feaster has been honored by a host of organizations: the nationalJaycees named him Outstanding Young Man ofAmerica, and the George Washington Carver Grand Lodge honored him as Outstanding Community Leader. He is an active member ofthe Morning Star Baptist Church and has contributed his time and resources generously to RCC. Day and evening classes are held ontwo campuses. The College offers 24 associate degrees and 11 certificate programs. Students have the advantage ofasupportive learning environment where faculty and staffreflect the cultural diversity ofthe student body. The mission ofthe Roxbury Community College Foundation is to directly andpowerfully affect educational opportunities for students ofRoxbury Community College by generatingprivate support for scholarships, apermanent endowment and other essential programs andservices at the College not covered by public funds.
