Mousally Receptionimmediatelyfollowinginthelobbyofthe Media/ArtsBuilding About the Keynote Speaker Lorraine Fowlkes graduated from Roxbury Community College in 1988 with Honors in the English concentration, she made the RCC President's and Dean's Lists, earned the RCC Student of the Year Award and organized RCC stu- dents for Jesse Jackson's Presidential Campaign. In addition she worked as a student assistant, helping to,plan and devel- op the RCCTransfer Program. After graduating, she pursued further studies at Wellesley College and Northeastern University. A resident ofMattapan, Fowlkes has am long history of grassroots political and tenet organizing. She presently serves as chiefofstafffor Boston City Councillor Gareth Saunders. Prior to her current position, she was a senior organizer for the Greater Roxbury Neighborhood Authority where she HUD successfully mobilized tenants for cooperative owner- ship oftheir apartment buildings. Fowlkes has alsoworked as Branch Office and Legal Redress Clinic Manager for the Boston Branch of the NAACP There she served as client advocate, did fundraising and recruited new members. She was tenant organizer for the Housing Division ofthe United South End Settlements, where she served as tenant liaison, generated a monthly newsletter and organized community meetings. Her Community and political affiliations are numerous. She is a member and coordinator of the RCC Alumni METCO Association, co-chair of the Lincoln/Sudbury Parents' Council, president of the Dorchester High School Parents Council, co-founder/organizer of RISE (Resolve Injustice, Stop Evictions), and was a delegate to the 1988 Massachusetts Democratic Convention. About the Composer LiftEveryVoiceandSing James Weldon Johnson was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1871. He received his early education there and then attend- ed Atlanta University. A subsequent career as public school principal, lawyer, diplomat, executive secretary for the NAACP andprofessor ofcreative literature at FiskUniversity paralleled his growth and maturity as a poet and man oflet- ters. In 1900, with his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson, he wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing". Johnson also wrote the lyrics for several musica shows and put his name on a num- ber ofhit songs in his early writing days. At the time ofhis death in an automobile accident in 1938 he was regarded as one of the foremost African Americans of his generation, (from The Poetry ofthe Negro, 1746-1970, edited by Langston Hughes andArna Bontemps).
