ROUTLEDGE INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK OF CLINICAL SUICIDE RESEARCH Suicide remains one of the most pressing public health concerns across the world. Expensive in terms of the human cost and associated suffering, the economic costs, the social costs and the spiritual costs, it affects millions of people every year. This important reference work collects together a wide range of research on suicide and suicide prevention, in order to guide future research and provide guidance for professionals about the best way to respond meaningfully to suicidal patients. Responding to the need for multi- disciplinary and international research to deepen our understanding of suicide, it demonstrates where our knowledge is firmly evidence-based and where new areas for research are emerging, as well as highlighting where we know little. Divided into six parts, each with its own editorial introduction and commentary, theRoutledge International Handbook of Clinical Suicideexplores research with and about survivors of suicide and Indigenous populations. The other sections look at suicide-focused research in psychiatric nursing, psychiatry, psychology, and social work and allied health. This book will be of interest to all advanced students, practitioners and scholars interested in suicide and its impact and prevention. John R. Every now and then an individual comes along who makes the world a better place. She is one such person. Whether it is in her ability and willingness to convey warmth, acceptance, understanding or compassion; or her rapier-like wit and ability to embrace the quirky aspects of life; or her academic and clinical insight, imagination and sound ethical thinking, time spent in Chris’s company is time well-spent indeed. Chris has been an influence for almost all of my academic life. From the formative meetings at mental health conferences in the United Kingdom, to her examination of my doctoral thesis, to co-authorship of numerous papers and as joint investigators in pioneering, federally funded research in the United Kingdom and Ireland, I have both witnessed and benefited from her unfaltering commitment to fairness and academic rigor. The lessons learned are innumerable, the belly-deep laughter is with me today, her patience – a balm for my own intermittent psychache. And even now, as Chris approaches the end of her physical journey, she is still teaching me things, still grounding me, still helping me laugh and see the funny side. Chris has helped me understand that bereavement and loss, as with so many life experiences, have an existential duality. They are (sometimes simultaneously) immensely painful and yet emancipating, opportunities for growth. They are not to be avoided (as if we could!) or denied, they are to be experienced; they are meaning-making experiences. So even though at times it seems like the world will be a more monochromatic place after Chris has gone (physically), the world will reverberate with the ripples of her presence, her contributions and her love for years to come. And with apologies to Ridley Scott ... “I will see you again ... but not yet.” Thispageintentionallyleftblank CONTENTS List of figures xiii List of tables xv Notes on contributors xvii Foreword:A view from a suicide survivor xxxi William T.Feigelman Foreword:A view from a member of the Canadian parliament xxxv Harold Albrecht,MP Foreword:A view from a member of the World Health Organization:Europe Office xxxvii Dr Matt Muijen Preface xli 1 Introduction:suicide as a significant and growing public health concern: coalescing and building our understanding through interdisciplinary and international scholarship 1 John R.Cutcliffe PART I Nursing 7 Editorial introduction 8 2 How psychiatric nurses experience suicidal patients:a qualitative meta-analysis 11 Fredricka L.Gilje and Anne-Grethe Talseth vii Contents 3 A mixed methods study of the increased risk of suicide following discharge:a long road ahead 24 John R.Cutcliffe,Paul S.Links,Henry G.Harder,Ken Balderson, Yvonne Bergmans,Rahel Eynan,Munazzah Ambreen and Rosane Nisenbaum 4 Transcending suicidality:facilitating re-vitalizing worthiness 39 Evelyn Gordon,Chris Stevenson and John R.Cutcliffe 5 Providing meaningful care:using the experiences of young suicidal men to inform mental health care services 52 Hugh McKenna,Sinead Keeney,John R.Cutcliffe and Chris Stevenson 6 Expressed emotion and suicidal behaviors 63 José Carlos Santos Editorial commentary 77 PART II Psychiatry 81 Editorial introduction 82 7 Genetics of the serotonergic system and implications for suicide research 85 Brandon Pierre and Vincenzo De Luca 8 Means restriction as a suicide prevention strategy:lessons learned and future directions 94 Mark Sinyor,Ayal Schaffer and Amy H.Cheung 9 Suicide in diverse populations:implications for Canada’s suicide strategies 103 Kwame McKenzie,Andrew Tuck and Samanthika Ekanayake 10 Suicide-related behaviour in Chinese women:illustrating the role of cultural conceptions of gender in understanding and preventing suicide 114 Juveria Zaheer,Paul S.Links,Samuel Law,Wes Shera,A Ka Tat Tsang, Catherine Cheng,Alan Fung and Pozi Liu 11 Matrix model for suicide prevention:focus on Canada and India 127 Paul S.Links,Juveria Zaheer,Rahel Eynan and Amresh Srivastava Editorial commentary 143 viii Contents PART III Psychology 147 Editorial introduction 148 12 USA suicide:epidemiology 151 John L.McIntosh 13 Attitudes toward therapists who lose patients to suicide 167 Erin F.Ward-Ciesielski,John L.McIntosh and Joscelyn Rompogren 14 Impact of client suicide on practitioner post-traumatic growth 179 Joseph S.Munson 15 Suicide risk:themes for high quality assessment 187 Christopher M.Perlman and Eva Neufeld 16 Trajectory-based models in the study of suicide 198 Monique Séguin,Alain Lesage,Johanne Renaud and Gustavo Turecki Editorial commentary 209 PART IV Social work and allied health care disciplines 211 Editorial introduction 212 17 Is research with suicidal participants risky business? 215 Rahel Eynan,Yvonne Bergmans,Jesmin Antony,John R.Cutcliffe, Henry G.Harder,Munazzah Ambreen,Ken Balderson and Paul S.Links 18 Creating an intervention for people with recurrent suicide attempts 227 Yvonne Bergmans,Keehan Koorn,Rahel Eynan and Colleen Pacey 19 What changes?
