As the proprietor of Simple Gifts Greenhouses, a specialty greenhouse and nursery growing unusual annuals and perennials, he learned the secrets of cultivating a huge array of domestic and exotic plants. The author of Tender Roses for Tough Climates, as well as a contribu- tor to such publications as Harrowsmith and The Garden (magazine of the British Royal Horticultural Society), Doug provides readers with his personal tried and true garden wisdom. He writes a weekly Internet newsletter — Garden Magic — circulated worldwide to over 4,000 subscribers at www.simplegiftsfarm.com. Canadian Gardening is one of Canada’s most popular gardening magazines. Published since 1990, Canadian Gardening is the industry leader and has become the definitive source for novice and expert gardening enthu- siasts. For more information, check out the Web site at www.canadiangardening.com. Lance Walheim graduated from University of California, Berkeley with a degree in botany and shortly thereafter began writing and researching books on gardening. He’s contributed to more than 40 books on topics ranging from citrus growing to rhododendrons. He has authored three previous books on roses. The National Gardening Association is the largest member-based, non- profit organization of home gardeners in the United States. Founded in 1972 (as “Gardens for All”) to spearhead the community garden movement, today’s National Gardening Association is best known for its bimonthly magazine National Gardening. Reporting on all aspects of home gardening, each issue is read by some half-million gardeners worldwide. Lance Walheim and the editors of the National Gardening Association dedicate this book to anyone who can’t walk by a rose without sticking his or her nose into it. Authors’ Acknowledgments Doug thanks the editors at CDG Books Canada, Inc. — Kim Herter and Joan Whitman — for doing such a great job and smoothing the way to make the book happen. He appreciates all those who reviewed the book for accuracy and relevance to Canadians. Although rose lovers seldom agree on the best varieties, the best blooming roses, or the most fragrant roses, we all agree that the rose is a wonderful flower. Doug sends a special thanks to Harry McGee for going over the manuscript with a fine red pen. Lance Walheim and the National Gardening Association say many thanks to the American Rose Society for the information obtained from many of their chapters, members, and publications. In addition, they thank Weeks Roses, Upland, California; Jackson & Perkins, Medford, Oregon; Sequoia Nursery, Visalia, California; Garden Valley Ranch Nursery, Petaluma, California; and the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, Pasadena, California. They thank Ann Hooper, a special consultant; Tom Carruth of Weeks Roses; F. Harmon Saville of Nor’East Miniature Roses; David P. Kidger of Primary Products; and American Rose Society Consulting Rosarians Martha Chapin, Dr. Thomas Cairns, Robert Ardini, Malcolm Lowe, and Louise Coleman. At NGA, editors Emily Stetson and Regan Eberhart, as well as Charlie Nardozzi helped keep the book on track, and thanks are extended to the NGA and the staff of the magazine National Gardening: David Els, Michael MacCaskey, Linda Provost, and Larry Somers. Effusive thanks to the team at IDG Books Worldwide, Inc., which includes in Chicago: Kathy Welton and Stacy Collins. In Indianapolis, Pam Mourouzis and Tammy Castleman contributed enormously to this book — many thank-yous to you both.
