How could I write a foreword to a book if I couldn’t get past the spelling of the authors’ names? But I reminded myself that one of the precepts I try to live by is never to shy away from the unfamiliar, so I tackled the names and learned how to spell them (I hope!). The second thing I noticed was that this was a book that had Ritalin in its title. Usually such books attack the use of Ritalin and other stimulant medications. Since I am an expert on the treatment of ADHD, and since I do prescribe stimulant medication for some of my patients, it seemed odd that the authors would ask me to write an endorsement for a book that I imagined attacked what I do in my practice. But, once again, I reminded myself of my precept not to shy away from the unfamiliar. So I read the book. I am very glad I did. This book taught me a great deal. Before reading it, I knew almost nothing about homeopathic medicine. This book opened my eyes. Now I know some of the basics, and I want to learn even more. I even want to look into the possibility of finding a homeopathic physician to join my practice. I will continue to recommend, as my first-line choice, the use of stimulant medication to treat ADHD. The track record of these medications is superb. Ritalin and other similar medications, such as Adderal and Dexedrine, have changed millions of lives dramatically for the better, in both children and adults. I know this because I have seen it up-close in my practice for years. I know that these medications work and that they work well. I also know that they are very safe as long as they are used under proper medical supervision. However, stimulant medications are not for everyone. About 20 to 30 percent of children and adults with ADHD will not respond well to stimulant medication, so they need an alternative. Also, many people, for good and not-so- good reasons, refuse even to consider taking stimulant medication because of all the bad reports they have heard about them. These people also need an alternative.
