Wyatt Acknowledgements The spring of ideas that eventually flowed into this book was prin 1 1 cipally from research carried out at the University of Southampton 03- 1- under the wise and generous supervision of Professor James 01 2 Sambrook. I was then looking into the connections between ct - e Wordsworth and early nineteenth-century scientists, particularly nn o C the geologists. Lifting the little-disturbed cover of the later poems e v a for this specific purpose revealed a very varied and challenging gr al world. The enquiries happily coincided with a small teaching e - P commitment at the Chichester Institute of Higher Education, so m where an innovative course on literature and place is pursued in Tro the School of Geography. I am grateful for discussions with et i k colleagues in the Institute's Schools of English and of Geography ote and particularly for the never-failing support and encouragement bibli s of Paul Foster, Emeritus Professor of English Studies. Librarians at et sit the British Library, the University of Southampton Library and the er v Chichester Institute Library have been helpful and prompt in their Uni o supply of material. I am indebted to the Governors of the same d t e Institute who encouraged even senior staff to continue to teach ns e c and to study, providing, in my case, support with typing and a m - li sabbatical term at the University of Southampton. o c My sincere thanks go to the team of people who have struggled ect. n successfully with my manuscripts in many drafts: Debbie Bates on c e (who also coordinated the final draft), Sue Shannon, Kim Hale, Sue av gr McGuire and Jill Sellwood. Without their unstinting help during al p my busy life managing an institution of higher education, all would w. w w have disappeared. m o Finally, I am grateful for the experience and wise advice of al fr Professor Stephen Prickett in bringing this book to its present state. eri at All the errors in it are mine. m ht g yri p o C IX 10.1057/9780230286214 - Wordsworth's Poems of Travel 1819-1842, John F.
