Statement by Petrus M. Amuthenu:
“Anna ‘Kakurukaze’ Mungunda  (1932–10. December 1959) was a Namibian
woman of Herero descent. She was the only woman among the casualties of
the Old Location uprising in Windhoek on 10 December 1959. Since Namibia's
independence on 21 March 1990, Mungunda is regarded as one of the heroes
and as important icon of the Namibian history. I chose this particular image
to add value to our national history, and to make sure she is remembered as a
Namibian heroine. This is the only pose of Anna that exists from the Keith Irwin
photo archives.”
