This review explores the fundamental knowledge available on the antimicrobial properties against pathogens responsible for dermatologicalinfectionsandcomparesthescientificevidencetowhatisrecommendedforuseincommonlayman’sliterature.Also includedisareviewofcombinationswithotheressentialoilsandantimicrobials.Theminimuminhibitoryconcentrationdilution methodisthepreferredmeansofdeterminingantimicrobialactivity.WhiledermatologicalskinpathogenssuchasStaphylococcus aureushavebeenwellstudied,otherpathogenssuchasStreptococcuspyogenes,Propionibacteriumacnes,Haemophilusinfluenzae, andBrevibacteriumspecieshavebeensorelyneglected.Combinationstudiesincorporatingoilblends,aswellasinteractionswith conventionalantimicrobials,haveshownthatmostlysynergyisreported.Veryfewviralstudiesofrelevancetotheskinhavebeen made.Encouragementismadeforfurtherresearchintoessentialoilcombinationswithotheressentialoils,antimicrobials,and carrieroils. 1.Introduction Intheeventofskintraumafrominjuriessuchasburns, skin thinning, ulcers, scratches, skin defects, trauma, or Theskinisthebody’slargestmechanicalbarrieragainstthe wounds, the skin’s defence may be compromised, allowing external environment and invasion by microorganisms.
